there usually placed in an industrial dishwasher and steamed and sprayed with an industrial cleaner such as gunk

After having heads chemically cleaned before at engine places, make sure you check for swarf inside the head (from your's or other heads in the washer) if you get it down at a pro place.

chucked mine in the washing mashine here at work...

Hot acid and chlorine wash with a rinse .. loats of steam when i open it!

we shall see when i get back after lunch how much of it is left!!

i cleaned the worst off with parafin.

Would people then spray the head (normally) to make it all the same grey or keep as it is?

looks pretty good .. very impressed!!

how much does head disassembly and cleaning cost?

I have been told the machine will break with the bottem end.

Im thinking parafin... sand down... acetone ... dry .. paint back (crackle effect) .. atleast thats what i think its called.

Anyone know what the paint is really called?

I'd only reccomend vapour blasting or soda blasting, anything else is way too harsh.

If its heavy carbon on then you'll want to soak it in carbostrip, then do the normal aqueous based hot tank and final dry solvent rinse.

i think mine was blasted with ultra fine black powder...

whatever it was is £30 a tub

so long as the bearing, guides and lifter bores were covered then your fine.

LOL...mine looks nothing as goos as that on the outside.

Still looks loads better.. there is corrosion, as i said before, that looks like black clouds in certain places on the machined bits... all the casting came clean and most of the carbon came out...its only a 1.4 8v head... im just practicing on it. Will have it rebuilt for the commuter/sterio on wheels!!

Lee was simply making the point that Gunner's head looks like it has only had a skim, ours in comparison...... That has been fully blasted- hence the valves and chambers are clean.
