Picking it up friday night.

Mk2 Fiesta XR2 with an RS Turbo lump slipped in there.

Red, non-sunroof, 90 spec recaros. It's purely belter. I can't wait to start the rolling burnouts

Yep Mk1 and Mk2 Fiestas handle great if you can get a handle of the back end I reckon you could show a clio its arse round a track.

ive been looking for a standard mark 1 xr2 but trying to find one is hard!! my love for retro fords has ignited in me again! lol

Know where theres a Mk1 Fiesta van would be great for decent engine fitting. Also know of a Mk2 Escort 4 door for £150 but needs some welding.

A properly driven fiesta in the same spec as pikies will eat a clio.

You're about 6 months too late FATBOY, my brother sold his very mint mk1 xr2 in autumn, twas his fifth and best one.

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/4236/fordfair003st9.jpg

As clowo says a well driven fiesta is as good a handling car as any and as said can have a lively rear. We have his old xr project at the mo weve not got round to starting yet but when it was on the road it was a whole lot quicker than my clio and easily as good, if not better in the bends (1700,flowed head, twin 40's etc), the trick is the weight of them. . . there is none lol

not speculation, experience.

Martin
27-02-2007, 01:15
there are a million different variables though....you have'nt even mentioned the specs of the cars you comparing..

Sure a well sorted mk1 Fez may kill a clio 16v/williams....but a GrpA Maxi will turn the tables again lol

Lee Keefy
27-02-2007, 01:16
I've never raced a group A Maxi, have you??? :)

The one at Oulton, Martin? Nothing special on the straights or the corners, from what I can remember.

Not that all XR2s are rubbish but, equivilant specs, one isn't gonna be able to hand a Clio its arse on a plate.

J o n
27-02-2007, 09:55
I had an XR2 on twin webber 45's, so lets not go overboard. they are great cars, weigh nothing and can go quick on the old CVH unit, BUT (and this is a big one) they dont handle in the same league. They are good, but a valver or Williams std for std will easily and I do mean EASILY out corner one. If you spend the money they can handle better maybe (doubt against a Willy though), but you can do the same to the Clio and it's always going to be the better handling car. The chassis on the Ford are good, but you cant compare them to a Clio, not even close, Williams would rape one on a track or a B road

Advantage the Fiesta has is weight though, you can put a turbo lump in up to a 2.1 Zetec turbo iirc and it would then rape pretty much any Clio tuned or not, still wont be as quick in the bends though, less so with that engine hanging over the front.

McPikie

I'm not going to say anything about the fiestas handling capabilities.

I will just let you all witness it on a track/peaks run once I have it to the spec I want it

Indeed, for race car it was nothing special...passed it with no great trouble..in comparison I could'nt keep with the mg zr race car that was there..

think regs on fiesta race cars limit them to around 130 brake and TBH i dont think :) theres not much past dampers and spring rates available to fiestas

Zollo
27-02-2007, 17:27
Yeah, I guess it was a Stock Hatch racer.

My Williams is completely standard, so about 150bhp. So not much in it considering I've also got electric windows, comfy arm chairs and a few other creature comforts. Clios all the way

Lee Keefy
27-02-2007, 17:37
agreed (stock hatch), a stripped out clio willy would probably feel like 165 bhp worth so i dont think it would be fair to compare them...also may be different if a fiesta class leader were driving, dont mean in speed but cornering (thats if he weren't!!!)

i think from what pikies said it'll be around 165 so it would be interesting to see a match there.... :)

interested in the escort mate! how much welding is some welding mate??? let me know full details please!

clowo16v

Needs new inner wings, sills and rear arches, probably a bit of floor welding not checked.

Its in a scrapyard next door to where I live in huddersfield.

28-02-2007, 12:35
think this thing is gonna fly, 200bhp/ton :)

forgot they only weigh 840kg's... Mk1's are bang on 800kg's!

Adjustable TCAs and Panhard rod will make for a cornering beast.

Hmmmm, 195/45/15's on each corner too

J o n
28-02-2007, 14:29
it will blow most Clio's away on the straights that's for sure, still not convinced on the handling side though. They are good handling cars, just not as good imo... we'll have to test it!

Have you picked this up yet then Phil, when we going to have a drag sprint? lol

McPikie
28-02-2007, 14:32
Picking it up on friday night

Saturday will be a case of sorting out a few bits and bobs, full service etc etc

I ain't giving it beans until I have sorted the swirl pot and fuel pump out though.

But, I think some airport tunnel action will deffo be in order

J o n
28-02-2007, 14:36
you reckon you'll be up and running by Sunday then? would love to see this thing, it will bring back a lot of fond memories, I loved my XR2 more than any car I've had!

and abso-****ing-lutely on the airport tunnels! we'll need someone stood on entrance and exit with a proper camera 8)

agree'd, will cream one on the straights, but will not touch one through the bends, anyway enough of that, and get some pics up! :D

J o n
28-02-2007, 16:05
I can still vividly remember the XR2 and "the back end", but I'd like to see what a sorted one handles like. It could be better, just my logic says if you can do that to one you can do it to the other and the better handling car will always be the better handling car... only problem comparing is that Phil is a ****ing loonatic, you wanna see the guy over the peaks run... it's like 2 live only 20 years younger ;) pmsl

No point in hanging about over the peaks lad.

Even 2 caravans didnt stop me going for the overtake on a corner

J o n
28-02-2007, 18:31
yeah, you just ****ed off at speed you an Moonie lol. was to far behind to even bother, just as long as I kept a Clio in sight I was happy. After the cat & fiddle I went for it a bit as it wasn't as bumpy, so me and Gaz had a good play, think you would have enjoyed that one!

we'll get some rolling start vids on a private road, we can 'bridge test' yours too, think even I'll have trouble keeping with this thing, forgot how much they dont weigh!

McPikie
02-03-2007, 14:08
I still think rolling starts will be a problem. It's likely to break traction in 3rd if there is even a sniff of moisture, ha ha ha

B00st muate

J o n
02-03-2007, 14:19
shouldn't break traction in the dry surely? although I cant remember what the gearing is like on an XR2 as it was over 6 years ago since I had one lol.

I reckon the problem exists between seat and steering wheel personally ;) throttle control is the answer ;) lol

McPikie
03-03-2007, 09:19
OK, I have picked it up and its currently running standardish power

Its got a K&N and a stainless and running 8-9psi

It is ripping the wheels up in 2nd in the dry already, and thats with an LSD box

Coops
03-03-2007, 11:50
std'ish power and cant put it down in the dry in second! oh dear!

Lee Keefy

we minted it at my house today....can confirm it does break traction in second no matter how the throttle is applied

had a passenger ride in this today 8)
gotta say i love the style and rep these cars have
love the noises and the grunt it has
but imo not as fast as i thought
pulls like a goood en but very short gears (what is the top end of mk1 turbo)
was like havin a jet up ya arse
took seconds to reach peak rippin at the road but didnt feel like it was all that fast in mph up the gears
but thats how turbo's are i hear ?

i think my williams would out drag it on a straight and twisty bits as it is :?: (this week)
but who knows with McPikie drivin coz i know he has lots of plans and bits to add plus he is a frikkin nutter haha
love it pikey old school cool rulez 8)
