The Haynes says that on the 16V you need to remove the RH driveshaft and use an engine crane to lift the engine up as high as possible to remove the sump.

Do you really need to do all that? I can't see why you would.

yup. you cant get the sump off without lifting the engine up cos you'll never get it out due to the subframe being in the way. trust me i've done it lol

You dont have to remove the drive shaft, just take the mount off and hoist as far as you can

You dont need to remove it completley.
Undo the top hub to strut bolt.
pop the roll pin out of the Driveshaft.
And then just pivot the hub to get the Driveshaft off the diff.
Once I had done that I tried to split the downpipe from the manifold but failed so I took the manifold off the block.
Undo the engine mount nut on the drivers side.
Attach crane to engine.
Lift it up as high as I could get it.
Swap them over!
Make sure you get on to the sump bolts straight though. They are REALLY easy to round off being Torx heads.

I didnt even touch the driveshaft/hub assembly and managed ok, maybe a bit easier that way but each to their own, id forgotten about the downpipe though lol Also better off taking the studs out of the gearbox first too so it can be dropped straight down rather than sliding it off with the subframe there.

Okay that's not quite so bad if I don't have to touch the driveshaft.

I haven't got my car to look at; why do you have to remove the downpipe?

You cant lift the engine with the exhaust manifoldstill attached to the downpipe, you dont have to remove it, just take off the two 13mm bolts holding it to the manifold and drop it out of the way still attached at the other end, engine is then free to move.
