View Full Version : Who here has manual steering?
Getting the conversion done on friday and just wanted to enquire who has done it and do they think its worthwile?
I read on here that a few people dont like the driving feel and the fact that there are slightly more turns lock to lock.
I suppose the only way to see is to try it and as I dont know anybody with this mod it looks like I am going to just try it myself!
Plus I am fed up of having to get my steering column re-welded every so often........
Any views on this would be appreciated.
I love mine
Not for everyone ....But as you say worth a try :D
my cup car has manual.....but im glad i only do 500miles a year in it lol.

isn't it meant to free up a bit more power??

also reduces a lot of weight

you need the rack and rods, the column,a shorter alternater belt and a 1.7 gtx alt bracket!!!
not a hard job but fiddley! 8)
i dont like it, as lee says not that much heavyier then pas but to many locks and dont feel as positive imo
The stnd willy power steering is the daddy ..great feel and feedback. Manual is alright...bit more power
Haven't had mine fitted yet, not as sure now as I would like the extra power, reduced weight and better turning circle as well as the fact that it makes the oil filter easier to get to. I'm not sure I would like the extra turns and heavy steering when parking... :?
oh it's a killer at parking speeds lol
A manual rack doesn't exactly make oversteer an enjoyable experience either. Not easy to get the lock on-and-off quickly, that's for sure
I actually dont think I want it now! I kind of like the steering as it is.........might have to look for a bit of extra power somewhere else, cams and remap maybe......
for all the messing about i wouldnt say its worth it
Its a lot of work to have done...i'd only say to do it if the engine is out anyway or if your serious about building a quick car. Again, that likely involves the engine coming anyway.

can you get different gearings, so the ammoount of turns lock to lock are smaller.
I got a manual on my little clio... i wish i didnt have to move the wheel so much!
Andy
Yes, I would probably do it if it wasn't for the extra turns, I dont mind heavy steering as I am a gym nut but I wouldn't like losing the pin sharp steering of the normal power setup.
There is alot more feedback from manualk steering, parking isn't a problem at all, people told me it woudl be a cunt, but i have a tiny wheel too and still managed to parallel park outside my digs every night, i wouldn't go backt o PAS for the world, cetainly not the shite they pass off for PAS on the old clios, ona new car it does make parking a piece of piss
Hmmmm, there are good arguements for and against it. i really need to drive one that has had it done to see for myself.
