sounds like its crossed.

Check if the brake light bulb is in the right way.

If a bulb blows, one filament may touch the other filament inside the bulb.

Thats what I mean by crossed.

When you switch the lights on, the filament for the tail light could be touching the brake light filament. And thats why your brake light is on all the time.

So cos the taillight is touching the brake light, thats why nothing works with the lights off. But as soon as you send current to the tail light, it lights both up, if you get me.

Stick another bulb in and see if it cures it.

I have a weird one. My n/s rear brake light doesn't work. So I swapped for the new rear clusters on ULF. Still doesn't work. However, the light does. So in one bulb one works and one doesn't!? :?
