i have just spent about 65mins doing a complete search of the club regarding tyres and the respective sizes and brands! lol
My car (which i pick up tomorrow) is running 195/45/15 toyo proxes t1-s. they look superb and from my research it appears they offer a great compromise between road holding grip, sidewall stiffness, as well as general wear and tear. the cheaper option is definately the 195/50/15's as they simply have more applications so are made in greater numbers. As you state, the standard fitment is 185/55/15 but as these have a limited application they are more 'specilised' and as with anything in life that carries that title you end up paying a premium for it. I havent driven my williams yet so i cant make an informed decision, i have merely made my own mind up after reading as many posts as i could!
185/55/15's - expensive, standard size from new,
195/50/15's - cheaper, wider rubber for extra grip but weigh more
195/45/15's - more expensive than 50's, smaller sidewall ratio so stiffer
sidewall and better 'sideways' traction :D
I'd gor for 45's on a track car.
185/55/15's - expensive, better ride, best for bumpy uneven backroad blasts
195/50/15's - cheaper, no noticeable increase in grip over 185s, less sidewall flex compared to 185/55
195/45/15's - poor over harsh surfaces, better turn in due to stiffer sidewall....pricier than 50 profile
I go for 195/50s everytime....best compromise between b road/ a road and cost

have a check out on mytyres.co.uk
195/50/15's =£31.10 each
195/45/15's =£43.30 each
ive got 185/55's on mine but i have had a go in 195/50's which i preferred and will swap to when i need a new tyre as the price for 185/55 is stupid.
thanks just ordered some 195 50 15 toyo t1 r's for 124 delivered..........
45 profile were 178 delivered

In my experience,
I originally used to use 185/55/15 but then i fancied a change to 195/45/15.
Both were toyo proxes.
185/55/15 - Far smoother ride than the latter.
195/45/15 - Would not consider having anything else having swapped to these. If your after comfort then these aren't the way forward, you feel every bump in the road, and i mean every bump,
but...the handling is without question a lot sharper than 195/55/15 in my opinion, and the grip and road holding is immense, id go as far to say as the difference between CHALK & CHEESE.
:D
As above really, i had 195/45's on my old car and yes u feel everything on the road but yes cornering did feel sharper to me. Im currently running 195/50's on my turbines as these in yokos from blackcircles are a total bargin. like £120 for 4.
195/45's for looks, 50's for perf.
For track use I run A539's no need running slicks unless you're racing/competing IMO, or at least can't justify £400 on tyres for a trackday.
I've had 539's on all season and they're still halfworn.
Toyo's just over heat and rip to bits as do F1's admittly while they're ok temps wise they offer better grip but once cooked (2-3laps) 539's are still going.
Not to mention 539's are cheaper, gutted they stopped making them, I'm buying them up now.
For wet, I'd run rainsports definately better wet grip than anything else I've used.
Stop making 539's!!! Arg!! Whats the replacement?

Was absoultely tons better when I put the track 195/50s on.

All A539 yes. Truly horrendous. First thought was how shockingly out teh tracking must be.
Not had that done yet but as soon as I just put 50s on it virtually wiped out all the issues.
Now it's on 55s.
cheers all,
toyos arrived friday afternoon and fitted ready for oulton......... shame it got cancelled :)
lol i use 195/50/15 for my road tyres on the valver(eagle F1 gsd3) and have full slicks in 15" size, cant remember profile tho
my williams is on 185/55/15 eagle F1s

I work in the tyre game and a539's are no where near as good as toyos, i rest my case that theyre cheaper. Im not saying that they are a bad tyre, not at all, because they aren't, but toyos are better.
i've gone for 195 45 because i think they look better :P
you guys are making me reconsider though
I didn't have my 195 50s on for long enough to notice really :(
