Hi guys, Anyone know at what age car you don't need a CAT. mine is a K reg valver, reg'd in '92 - Would I need a CAT for the MOT?

dont quote me on this, northy will probably no, but isnt it before the end of august 92 that you have to have a cat??

my 1994 16v passes without a cat. think they're more worried about emissions and the car must have easily been within the regulations for the time without a cat.

correct me if i'm wrong guys but is it not the case that 92 was the year when all new cars had to have a cat as standard, whereas the mot only tests for emissions and not whether a cat is present.

therefore, you don't need a cat to pass an mot with any car, however newer cars will not pass the newer limits without one????

its ment to be april 1992 iirc.

but a good running car should pass without (or so ive been told) but always question this. i was under the impression that the co2 levels were much much stricter with a cat on, and therefore would induce a fail

say its running a 1991 engine. and it doesnt do a cat test then...

u can have a non cat test if your car was registered before Aug 1992.

Am I right in thinking August '92 would be L reg?

mine's 1994 on L so no.

by that reckoning, i'd say K is sept 92-sept 93 so you should have a cat.

like i said though, try it without if you don't want to put one on as mine passes. you don't have to comply with current emissions standards, just those of the time.

Chris is correct. Sept 92 is a k plater. Anything before is a J.

my k reg hybrid passed without a cat, and easily to.

I do MOT's atm my garage so every K-Plate clio needs a Cat full stop. Any J reg doesnt need a cat. The start of K in 1992 is the start of cat tests on emissions. I have tried running without a Cat and it doesnt work on the emissions tester. 0.20 Co reading is the limit and without a cat your looking at around 0.50+

If you have a friend in the Mot department, maybe he can wizzle the probe up another exhaust if he isn't scared

Thanks for that, so, As I thought, I'll need one for my MOT, and a decat after... That's still easy enough...

so what happens if you have a pre cat car with an engine and ecu set up from a cat model (j reg valver/williams hybrid for example). would you be able to run this and it pass without a cat bearing in mind the ecu map was set up for a cat?

yes as pre cat cars are allowed 0.9% co iirc.
