Could it also possibly be a low temp thermostat in the engine he might not know about?

heater matrix doesn't necessary affect the engine temp your confusing it with the rad. the heater matrix is a smaller rad (behind the dash?) to control the cabin temp

the car may not overheat if the heater matrix is partialy blocked,if some water gets through the fan will stop the car from overheating as will the increased efficiency of the new rad :D

I've never seen a low temp stat stop the blowers from blowing hot air.

exactly, water is always flowing through the matrix unlike the rad.

it'll be down to a blocked heater matrix, the copper pipes inside them are of a small bore and can easily get sludged up after years of service. cheap to buy but a pig to replace

Well thats weird. Whenever my car is left running, it warms up to about the third line on the temp gauge, and the heaters are very hot, but when the car is being driven, the temp gauge drops right down, to the first line, and the heaters are only slightly warm!

My guess was that it was the low temp thermostat keeping the engine cooler, is that not right?

could be no thermostat fitted

If that's the thing that's screwed into the site of the rad, mine has one of those. Has been replaced as the one i had in there didn't work..

thermostat is in a housing on the engine

Is that a bad thing? Any reason why it wouldn't have one, ie, for a cooler engine?

jus found out it could be a blocked pipe to the heater matrix or the heater matrix its self!!! :(

no mate, the stat is there to warm the engine quicker from cold, nothing else.
