View Full Version : Williams is 'Horrible'

Zollo
23-01-2007, 11:13
Was driving a car-ignorant mate about in the Williams on the weekend, and during a bit of manoeuvring - followed by the usual whines, whirs and groanings from the power steering and a slight knocking of the exhaust on the underside of the car - he came out with: "This car is horrible, isn't it?". Erm, yeah

Which leads to the question - is it just me, or is anyone else embarssed by their car?! It's not just the noises... it's the boy racer looks and gold wheels as well.

PS. Will a simple PAS fluid change help things out?

No not all, for anyone that knows anything about cars it is legendary and the amount of people that point and stare is worth it. Everyone looks at you when you fill up at the petrol station and you can tell theyre thinking 'wow is that a real williams?!'. The PAS cant be any worse than the mini's, and they sound stupid! At least the problem can be fixed on a willy, the mini owners are stuck with that annoying 'whiirrrrrrr' every time they turn the wheel!

i dont own a Williams at present but my PAS is loud as hell or slow hard steering. Also even though its not overfull i have to wipe down the top of the reservoir now and then.

i know what you mean, my exhaust taps quite a bit, lots of passengers moan about that

most of my friends are car literate and know though that although my old heap is noisey its still quicker than theirs.

: "This car is horrible, isn't it?". Erm, yeah :oops:Tell him to passenger in a highly-tuned turbo jap car with "clunking" mech LSD and crazy-loud exhaust; 10 mins in that and he will say the Williams is silky smooth :)

PS: I have made 2 passengers so sick in the Williams, that they had to take the taxi. Not my fault, the roads were bumpy and twisty. :)

Way round it is to fit a new pump.

Just like I did. Sadly there's no way I can be arsed swapping the new one over to the new car though.

As regards the car being an embarassment, I suppose mine's worse than most given it's wonky front and bent rear 1/4. But then it now gets treated like a right slag, never gets washed etc. So it tends to piss people off and embarass them when they try and have a go.

How much is a new pump? And is it an arse to fit?

Swervin_Mervin
23-01-2007, 14:33
£200 with a discount and an utter tw4t to fit. My bill that MOT time was £850 excluding pump although about £250 was welding and other bits.

All sounds rather expensive. I knew there was a reason why I'd decided I was going to live with it! Spending enough on the car anyway so I'll have to suffer a horrid car for a while longer :x

I changed the belt on both my valver and Williams, sorted out the noise no worries!!

had a bit if a squeak after oulton, nothing a drop of slick 50 didnt cure though, to top the fluid up.

if it helps i used forte p/s treatment in my valver,my hybrid and my mate used it in his valver and his willy, and although it doesnt get rid of the noise it makes a huge difference,i would seriously suggest getting some and trying it

New Pumps are expensive £200+ from memory, u can get yours reconditioned for £100 though.

Not a massive job to do, is a few hrs labour I reckon.

Rad, OS headlamp out for ease, alternator off, pulley off, few brackets off, bit of wiggerling and it should come out.

fooking ell gaz your like a full blown mechanic now!!!

Slick 50® Power Steering Formula
Wear, oxidation and foaming can cause problems and breakdowns in power steering systems. Dry or shrunken seals can cause leaks and loss of fluid in the power steering system which can cause a dangerous loss of control. Slick 50® Power Steering Formula is specially formulated for today's complex power steering systems. Not only does it lubricate and refresh the dry shrunken seals that are the cause of many power steering system leaks, it actually helps prevent the conditions that can lead to seal leaks.

Protects against leaks

Controls oxidation and foaming

Performs even in extreme cold

Keeps seals in good condition

Good fluid, a good bleed and the correct level is key. I had my new pump moaning like hell after doing Elvington last year and in the end it cleared up by topping up with Slick 50 to the top of the vanes

is it not the ring in middle the max level? says that in haynes..

also elvington was elvis there or had he left the building? :D

It not only says it in Haynes but also the owners manual. However teh specialists I used to go to always filled to the top of the vanes. I once took some out so it was at the circle marker in the bottom. Cue loads of noise.

At Elvy the thign boiled a bit through enthusiatic use and left it at the lower marker. When I removed the PAS header bottle though, there are some Min/Max markings and the Max marker is level with the top of the vanes. Now I always fill to that marker and never have any issues. 8)

I've driven your car Zollo and the power steering was no louder than my old 16v's. You're aware of it but it's no big deal, and the other noises are from the fact the car is stiffer than most 'ordinary' cars. The worst for squeaks etc was my old gt turbo, much worse!

Its fine. Kick him in the nuts.

As for self conscious paranoia having gold wheels: only people who really know nothing about cars would say its 'chavvy' or something. This is a car thats been spread all over Top Gear and loads of famous mags for YEARS. Any real man knows this and will doff their metaphorical cap as you rumble by in yer willy.

i know what you mean

my girlfriend used to laugh whenever i turned up at hers in a 16v clio

she laughed at the valver cause of the bonnet vent and i how i was impressed with my turbines i'd paid £60 for.... she said they look like hubcaps...

then she was in hysterics at the williams cause the gold wheels look stupid! out of place and she was embarrassed to be seen in it... no shit!

the pulsar she said was the ugllest car she'd ever seen, but she was scared to death with the speed

she said swift gti's look like there from the 1970's

i think the fact is that these cars are now old and 95% of the public think they look ridiculous and chavvy.

in 5 years time half of us will probably think the same when were driving round in "newer" more reliable cars

you only have to look at people like "scott 16v" spent years on this forum saying he wanted a williams and loved them so much..

he finally bought one and sold it a week later and bought a VW

no ones seen him since!! lol

you have to get your own satisfaction out of the car and be happy at just yourself liking it and possibly a few guys on thi site :P because they simply are not anymore a car that impress's anyone at all, well... very very few

some days i still get fulid coming out of top of cap when above ring in middle .. do you get more when 3/4 full ?

He drives a Citroen ZX 1.9TD. Which makes it even worse that he thought the Williams was horrible! :P

I think Matt's girlfriend sums up what the majority of the general public think. Us enthusiasts are few and far between unfortunately!

Topped the fluid up last night and it seems to have made it a whole lot quieter (so far) 8)

They aren't the most refined cars in the world are they! Mine makes all kinds of noises - clonky lsd, wheezy power steering, squeaky dashboard, not to mention rock hard ride! Nobody ever says anything tho, they're too busy shouting at me to slow down! lol

Most people I come across seem to know what it is, the biggest problem I get is people thinking it's a fake Williams!

standard issues. My PAS is fine on my car but does dribble abit of fluid out the bottle but then all my 16v's have done that aswell. I have a mongoose which use to knock but after using a landrover innertube to wrap around the exhaust where it goes across the torsion bar, its pretty much sorted it

i get stick all day of my work mates for owning a french car let alone its a clio i get called a hairdresser, but i guess that it what comes with working on jap motors all day not much really seems to go wrong on them!
i wouldnt swap my willi for nout maybe get a jap run about aswell as, but when it comes to having fun and feeling confident behind the wheel willi wins hands down.
while tanking across the mountain you come up behing a scooby he looks all smug looking in his rear view mirror with and his bimbo missus{my missus is blond :P } and his face looks a little less smug after he's booted it and Willi is sat on his ass, comes to an open view corner he taps the brakes the willi has not even cocked his inner leg so you stick it on the outside and gun it, passed and when you pull into the town centre park and lock up, he burbles past you all know that smug feeling you get. i feel like that eack time he fires up.

Long live the willi
Be proud of what he stands for! and can do!

Even though I don't own a proper williams, only a 50% hybrid thing, I love the way that it has some days when it doesn't want to play and other days when you start it up and it's tearing at the leash to go and play down some country lanes :P 8)

The steering is full of feel and sometimes a bit heavy, the clutch is nice and meaty (none of this pansy soft-clutch effort on newer cars), plus people always underestimate what it can do - after going round the outside of a porsche 911 turbo in the wet on a roundabout on the way into Lakeside, and after beating a Z3 off the lights who then had to prove some sort of point by caning past in the middle of town on a 2 lane road   it's far too much fun when it's on top form to consider changing it for something more boring/safer/newer :D

The only think I'd change is the low geared top gear that means I'm doing 5k revs at a ton for hours on end when I'm going anywhere miles away LoL

having read the whole of this I laughed, fortunatly Im lucky, the willy has been sorned for the winter and needs a bit of work, so Im driving 325i tourer and the 2.5t skyline on the weekend. So I have a good compromise at the moment, My williams2 has been described as many things, including boy racer, well no one under 21 is getting insurance on the willy in London, unless they have a rich daddy or loadsa money. My missus hates the williams, it is lowered and has a very harsh ride, it has quads all round and just looks nutty(in my opinion). Many people just stare, which is fine, but the thing I have missed the most is the pure RAWNESS of the car, when you get to 2.5k revs and the power band kicks in, its just awesome, very underrated, compared with the skyline which has a very smooth delivery of power, allthough I have had the skyline going sideways, I was going straight, uphill and I floored it in the wet and it started to spin to the right, this was serious fun. The skyline is a nice motor but is not the most agile thing and it drinks fuel!! I have had someone in the back of the skyline complaining that the floor was vibrating, it does have a huge exhaust.

So having a Williams is a cult thing! part of history and is a rally bred monster. Most Lay-men would never understand what it is to own a car like the willy, most of them dont even warm them up, straight on the key and they are off!! SO your mate sounds like he like a smooth comfertable, slow and sloppy ride, with std KWIK fit bits on the car and does not know the meaning of trippoding(three wheeling mate!)

dont know how anyone can call a williams a girls car. Staring at it front on it looks brutal imo. It scares alot of the bigger cars to death and has wiped many smug grins off the likes of Mitsi FTO owners. It's a small car with a big personality and you can never fully appreciate one untill you have driven one. 8)
