Take the engine out? Or drop the subframe?

Who suggests what and why?

When I broke my clio up I took the complete subframe out the bottom to get the engine and box out and I would say its easier.

drop subframe means you dont have to do cooling system again, much easier if you have ramp access imo

I don't have a 4 post ramp, but I do have some HUGE axle stands, lol

So, I need to take all the suspension off, drain gear oil, shafts out, battery and tray off, then undo the subframe and it should come out?

bont need to take all the susp off mate. just undo the ball joints and track rod ends off the hubs everything else is right oh dont forget to take the bolts out the box to the engine  oh and despite what Lunner says you dont have to remove the starter  he just prefers to remove it as he thinks its easier but its not necessary.dont forget to undo the loom off the box too

You dont need to undo the track rod ends & balljoints just take the 2 strut to hub bolts out and drop all the suspension down with the subframe.

from what I have seen people post in the past it seems to be easier to drop the subframe. When I did mine I took out the top which wasn't too bad tbh and meant you can leave the subframe alone. If I was to do one again though I would probably take the engine out if I had a hoist as last time I had near enough everything undone to remove the engine apart from the exhaust, lol.

If you're changing the subframe anyway just drop the whole lot out of the bottom.

You need to disconnect the rad, exhaust, gear linkage, ABS and lambda sensors, brake lines, all engine wiring etc same as you would anyway. Get a piece of 4x2 across the width of the subframe then jack it slightly. Remove the top engine mounts, then undo the 4 subframe bolts. Lower the jack down and it should all drop out. You can then get a couple of mates and lift the front of the car over the top of the engine and wheel it back onto axle stands.

Done it both ways, i found its six and half a dozen! depends on what equipment is to hand. bit easier doing with the subframe off if its got abs. can be fooking tight getting it past the pump

undo the 3 subframe bolts on the passenger side, undo the dog bone, all the loom, take off airbox/ik, take the battery tray and mount off, then out through the top.

Out the bottom is best easily, i managed it with tiny axle stands so you'll have no probs
