Impact wrench is the way forward, whips them straight off!

Or snaps your hex bit in this case. :P

Just get a 21mm socket on the top mount with the impact wrench...

So is that what everyone does? I had the impact driver driving a hex bit and was bracing the nut with a swan neck spanner.

yeah gun the nuts off

Swervin_Mervin

Not got a gun. I'll try the impact driver on the nut rather than the strut rod.

bought myself a cheap 12V impact gun that works of the battery for when i,m not in the garage. think they are really good in situations like these http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=66213&ts=86227 bit like that but 250 quid cheaper

So you don't brace the strut rod? Whats to stop it just spinning?

i use a long hex key built into a 1/2" socket and a long braker bar to brace - then a very good swan neck spanner onto the nut.

The first 1/2 socket drive i got i snapped in the top of the strut...the second one held out and did the job.

That's pretty much what I did Northy last time I fitted new ones to ULF. This time I opted to use the driver. Succeeded on the o/s and broke it on the n/s

did it brake in the strut or are u lucky and can remove the hex key ?

Swervin_Mervin

Broke in the strut but left enough sticking out to retrieve it. I reckon I'd have been home and dry (well a bit wet based on the weather) if that one came undone because mine haven't been on long so should come off easily.

Purely our of curiosity, does heating the Nylock up with a hairdryer work?

u could buy new top mounts, use a blowtorch and melt the nyloc and they come out easy! 8)

never had to do that, but is always an option.

Check my review on the clarke 12v impact wrench there. Best £25 in ages! Instant torque so no need to secure with the hex bit.
