Prolly one for Stromba....

I can get a protin shake thats low carb hihg protien, so contains 10g of protien per can, and costs £1 a can

I can go to my locl co-op and buy a 200g bag of penuts, each 100g provides me with 29g of protien, each bag is 59p

So i can eat half a bag of peanuts a day and get 29g of protien a day extra costing me £0.30, or i can drink 3 protien shakes a day and get 30g of protien, at a cost of £3 a day.

Is there any reason i shoudl't go for the cheap option over the more expensive one, ie peanuts?

Stromba told me the best source of protein is animal seaman... 3 shakes 4 times a day ;) (pun intended this time)

Firstly why do you need the protein?

Burns recovery? Muscle building? Prevent muscle wasting?

Different proteins aregood for different things. But lets assume its for muscle building (as i know you are a lanky guy who does weight training).

Protein is made up of amino acids. There are 20 amino acids. 8 are whats called essential amino acids (threonine, leucine, valine, isoleucine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, lycine, methionine). The others are non essential. Essential means the body needs them and cant make them. Now for muscle building the branch chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine) are the most important as they make up the majority of muscle tissue (ie you break down the muscle during training, and you need to build it up during recovery). The ratio of amino acids are different in different proteins. The best proteins are the ones with the highest biological activity (ie they contain the amino acid profile closest to that of human tissue eg have alot of the branch chain amino acids + other essential amino acids). Milk, eggs, red meat and whey protein have high biological activity. Eggs is classed as a score of 100, whey protein over 100, and milk about 92.

Some other foods with the same amount of protein, may contain amino acid ratios that are hard to utilise by the body. Peanuts, beans and soya contain alot of protein, but its not in a useable form. Soya for example contains very little methionine. So is 50 g of egg protein better than 50g of peanut protein. For building muscle - yes.

If you are interested in building muscle then eat:

Whole eggs (at least 6 to 10 a day)
Whole milk (pints of the stuff)
Red meat (lots)
And anything with calories.

Thats how all successful trainers have built muscle. Lots of calory rich protein and fat rich food.

A high fat diet also raises testosterone levels.

LOL

Pm me your e-mail address and i'll sort it when at home.

At my prices shakes work out about £1.20 (i think) each but contain on average 40g protein per shake.

To gain mass you need to consume 1.5g protein per lb of bodyweight.

Lunner

So i need to consume somethign like 250g of protien per day

So thats about 4 shakes a day in addition to my normal diet?

Can't really say mate. I like the peak body whey. Banana flavor is the business. But everyones flavours differ. Got chocolate as well which is nice. I'll have plenty at FCS to get me through the day, pop over i'll knock you one up and let you try it if you like.

Cue edit by Stromba or Mark.
