Just thinking that I fancy a change from clios... been 4 years now since I had anything else....and I quite fancy something a bit newer but cheaper so I can pay some loan off....thinking about a 106/306 gti / saxo vts / civic vti / bmw 328 etc what do you think?

are you mad, with that t/b'd beast, i reckon you'd deffinatley regret selling that car with its spec, keep the beast and soldier on!

no point Martin, you'll only be back to Clio's again... why not get a newer more ghey Clio, still quite fun, bit easier to work on and dont seem as expensive to run.

Martin

Looking to pay my loan off so don't wanna spend more then 2/2.5k really...hmm gonna keep the clio for a few months yet but the plan has always been to sell at the end of the summer....5k is a lot to have locked up in a car for me, especially if I want to get a house/flat this year.

Nearly got a 306 gti-6 when I ended up getting my first williams...so I quite fancy one of them tbh...newer but still quick and fun.

J o n
15-01-2007, 09:42
well if you can get the 5k back again then go for it, but I'd make it your last Mk1 Clio tbh mate, going back again would just be crazy and pointless imo.

J o n
15-01-2007, 11:39
not really, my new ones not actually broken down but for a battery, so I'm doing well by my Clio standards! lol

Williams certainly wasn't more reliable, far from! hehe

You'd have to get a rallye m8...less for you to strip out at a later date ;)

aye would'nt mind a bit of luxury and rwd....gonna make good use of the clio this summer though... shame we don't have meets anymore  ....I'll have to be content with plenty of pod / york missions and a trackday or two.

Martin

Martin
15-01-2007, 13:56
aye...I presume 25th is a sunday? Strong wc turnout would be good, I remember the first cs meet I went to...was more mk1s than mk2s...last one I went to I was the only mk1 in 20 cars lol

And if everyone is going to attend, can we have a "proper" drive this time, instead of everyone fannying about while I took off up the Cat & Fiddle.

I had ordered my pint before everyone started to pull into the car park :?

Martin
15-01-2007, 14:00
Problem is if you have a long convoy...your fooked if your stuck at the back lol

Martin

Back on teh car suggestions I'd try the 306 martin. Rallye though.

I think you'd rather the extra pace tbh of the 306 over the 106. Engine is similar in delivery to the F7R imo, but better.

Chassis is fantastic and is a different challenge altogether. Definitely requires bigger balls to exploit to its full potential.

I've not heard good things about the E36 328s. Very good apparently but far too competent and boring. Obviously you'd need to drive one though as everyone's different.

Id go for a VTS. I think saxo's are great cars. Driving my gfs this week and compared to what i own at the minute it feels rapid and a good laugh in the corners.

Mk1 VTR's are the same pace as Mk2. Settled that today!

in my opinion mate having something like a 106,saxo even the 306 will be the same as having a clio, build quality isnt much better and still getting old....

if u really want somethin out of that lot i would suggest the beemer, but rememer a 328 could have the nikasil block wear prob so get one checked before buying and also fuel consumption isnt great

but german cars are def well built,my vr6 golfs now on 117k and is still kicking out 197 bhp and still gets to 60mph in 6.52 according to my g-tec :)

i would def suggest german tho matey, thats why i dont wanna sell my golf, its quick enough, handles well on my coilovers and is bloody comfortable

still miss L765 Gyw tho :(

J o n
16-01-2007, 12:52
as above, German is a good way to go... failing that some sort of jap turbo wagon would be good... still think bang for buck you cant really beat a classic shape scooby. some well modded UK spec ones kicking about now!

Performance for pound, grab a Pulsar GTiR

and get a spare gearbox just in case, lol

does fixing it come into 'performance for pound' though? lol

... is it just me that thinks these are ugly as sin too?

McPikie

Yes, they are ugly, but in a nice way.

Like a ****ing rocket ship off the line though

big hp
16-01-2007, 13:53
There not that ugly, IMO.

Drink like george best though. My mate had one and sold it due to petrol costs.

16-01-2007, 14:16
true, they go like stink are are the original Cossie killer... but those looks... it's fookin' horrible, I'd not touch it with a stolen one!

I disagree that the 306 is the same, or any for that matter. I've found all the citroens I owned to be far more reliable than the 2 renaults I've owned.

16-01-2007, 17:41
Don't be ghey!!!!! Get rid!!!!!!

Spend a Grand and will get a pimp everyday german ride :D

Im going to the dirty meet ......so glad ive not washed my car this year :P

16v_russ
16-01-2007, 17:43
well as iv said mate it depends from car to car, when i owned l765gyw i did 12k of hard miles in her and never let me down once, and the valver before that was the same, where my 106 ete its head gasket and clutch in 3k,so i believe it depends on how the cars looked after

Swervin_Mervin
16-01-2007, 18:58
Probably does I agree. None of mine have ever broken down. The Renault has been more unreliable though. I just think Renault put even less thought in to parts design than PSA.

16v_russ
21-01-2007, 10:56
lol agreed there

Zollo
22-01-2007, 10:11
As I've just said else where - 306s are amaaaazing! I'd recommend having a drive. Awesome fun on a track... it doesn't know how to understeer. The Rallye may be a tin bit quicker but the 6 is just as much fun.

I'm not sure an E36 is right for you, though. A bit too refined, and not much fun unless you're attempting to destroy the rear tyres at every opportunity. Expensive to run!

Martin
22-01-2007, 10:14
Just a 8) thought as I've only ever had fwd....love the white rallyes though

Zollo
22-01-2007, 10:23
How about an E30 then? For £2500 you could make a 325i very nice indeed.

Indeed, only problem is I've had my fill of rust on clios so would prefer something a touch newer....cliolord a cheap vts would be a good buy i think...

dannyt
22-01-2007, 13:24
no imo a cheap vts is a downgrade from the clio, even though newer, like everyone said a gti-6 or rallye would be nice, but how about a cheap saph cossie 4x4 or 2 wheeler?

- Accord type R?

- RX7?

- Mk2 Ph1 172?

- E36 M3 can be had for good money now mart?

- Uno Turbo, old skool!!lol

Dan

Martin
22-01-2007, 13:35
the remit is something like this

2/2.5k
Newer than say 1998
Handles well / Fun drive
Nippy ie valver pace or better....

I know it's gonna be a downgrade from the clio lol but I'm looking at saving 2+k....so thats not surprising!

cliolord
22-01-2007, 14:39
here is an idea. Civic 1.5 LSi (don't really rust out and are reliable). B16a engine conversion with some decent front brakes. Job done. I believe they move up to the 1996/7 marker? Will be 160hp of vtec power but without decent torque but still will be fun to drive above 5,000rpm? a honda powered CRX Mk2 Vtec would be the other choice if I didnt own the clio 8)

Swervin_Mervin
22-01-2007, 14:55
There's one car that fits that bill, and my mrs owns one.

Looks aren't all that and very few people would consider one as they're not "cool" but when you've seen a guy sliding one in to the Hall Bends at Cadwell then you'd not be too arsed about looks.

Martin
22-01-2007, 16:39
ahh xsara vts....are they still cheap as chips?

Daz.
22-01-2007, 19:35

Bloody good choice!

Can you live with them not being as pretty as a 6 though?:-k :-k

22-01-2007, 21:06
imo any oldish french hot hatch aint gonna be reliable, well every one I've owned has had problems one way or another. Personally I'd keep the one you own, the engine has just been rebuilt and it's mint, it's also unique having t/b's and goes like stink. Could u not afford to keep it as a weekend toy and get an old diesel or something as a run around?

I would avoid 306's, I had an S16, nice car but doesn't compare with the williams performance/handling wise and had no end of problems...

Martin
23-01-2007, 09:07
I'm looking to cash in some of the value of the car to pay off a loan Tommo so keeping the car long term is'nt gonna work...as much as I'd like to !

Swervin_Mervin
23-01-2007, 10:13
Cheap as yes. Only faults have been exhaust issues but a lot of that is down to poor fitting by whoever's done them.

Only other trouble was a bust coolant pipe and the passenger seatbelt light is currently playing up.

Zollo
25-01-2007, 15:37
We know these can be quick. And no rust issues. And right price...

Saw a nice one the other day. How about a circa 90'-91' Honda CRX? Tonnes of mod bits available. At about 800+kg in stock trim, throw in uprated suspension and a modern VTEC lump would make a decent (and reliable) track/road car.

Zollo
30-01-2007, 09:33
