K seriese engines are a doddle to work on, pretty much straight forward. Cant remember hoe tight they are in the mgf but think there ok. Check the head, there realy bad for warping, would also poss get the block checked aswell.

Ive heard that the job itself isnt too difficult but bleeding the cooling system can be a bitch with the rad being at the front and all that pipe in between.

Just seen this...(i know it was posted a while ago)

yes bolts go all way through I believe (have a metro 1.4 gti k-series sitting without a head on it in my garage right now lol).

Get the updated head gasket with the METAL dowels not the plastic ones.

K-series is easy to work on, and the 1.8 can make very good power pretty cheaply.

you'll have fun with the entry size of the MGF engine cover, apart from that the job is easy. Headbolts are of a throughbolt design.
