I would say they are worth it if you spend the time getting a setup which your happy with.
Just remember to use them for what they are designed for and you will be fine, these are not trackday coilovers.

thanks man, what these things like to maintain? can u just bolt 'em in and leave them for good or dya have to take goood care of them?

The only regular maintanence needed, would be making sure that the threads on the body are well greased to prevent corrosion.

Dont waste your money on these if your using them for alot of track work.
They are not warrentied for track use.

Im personally using 180lbs front springs and that gives a nice setup imo.

had mine for over 12month and they have done 9 trackdays without any problems so far, mine run 250lb springs which ive cant complain about either, i dont use it on the road much at all, just track really so doesnt worry me at all!

@jamie your almost correct i had custom springs made for my williams which was 200lb rated, sold them though!

Thats fair enough.
I just personally feel that these coilovers are portrayed wrong for the application on the forum.
They are fine in fast road use, but for regular trackdays there is a design flaw which makes them weak and potentially dangerous.

I'm sorry mate but your talking wet, I'm sure there are several members on this site (including me) which will disagree with you and are running AVO Coilovers. What is this design flaw you keep talking about bcos i certainly haven't spotted it yet and this is the second set of AVO coilovers i've had and i can certainly say they're good enough for the job!!!!

So personnaly IMO your talking wet!!!

Where the stub axle joins to the shock.
The wrap around plate isnt strong enough for track use.
If you look at all good quality coilovers, they have this part welded on individually.
Where as the avos are pressed on and welded at the bottom.

This can mean the shock can bend at the top of the pressed on plate.
Which is why i wouldnt recomend them for alot of track use, and Avo doesnt warranty them for track use either.

If you look at Avos track specific coilovers they have addressed this with welding the stub axle contact points.

Bayliss
01-03-2008, 19:54

what do you think a coilover is for bcos it ain't just to lower a car to make it look pretty!! Thats why ppl buy "lowering springs"

One which is supported for use on track, and has been designed for use on it.

Well according to Avo it pretty much is just for lowering: http://www.avouk.com/pm/4

richy
01-03-2008, 20:43
that only states that if you want to lower your car more then 50mm then they are the only kit which have shortened pistons and body length, doesnt state for road use only

obviously like any kit be it coilover or normal if you want proper motorsport stuff then big money is needed!

Aye abit worrying when thats the large portion of the sales blurb.
If you ring them up they will say thats its not warrentied for track use.
And there warrenty blurb on the site is written well..

Yes it is, but when you think how much oe suspension costs to devolp, you can see how the costs are incurred.

richy
01-03-2008, 20:59
if you read this statement on there warrenty page, even there competition stuff isnt warrentied, only covered at there discretion.

Although many avo products are sold for competiton use, where these products are used for competiton, no warranty is offered by avo uk ltd, however if a product fails within this envirnment, the repair/replacement will be at avo uk's discretion

and as said mine have covered 9days over the past 12 month without any problems, dont get me wrong, if i had a few k to burn then id invest in a motorsport kit! but its only a trackday car not race/rally

What do you think coilovers are designed for bcos it certainly ain't a very good way of making your car look pretty lowered when it takes you best part of an hour or two to set the heights and damping all the same especially on likes of a clio wheres its a torsion bar at rear.

Reading that statement on the link u put on it say "with adjustable damping rate and adjustable ride height, these kits allow for the drive to setup to the suspension to their own needs" why would u need to do that if you just planned on lowering it and driving on 'Back Roads' when we all know u can this easily with either springs or standard suspension.

And as richy mentioned they don't even warrent the competition parts so either way your in a no win no lose situation. The only loss being that you've spent best part of £1000+ on an expensive kit which is far to over rated for what you want to actually use it for, as where the cheaper kit your spending a fraction of the price which is doing the same job as the expensive kit and if it breaks it won't cost you a month's wages to repair or replace and thats only if AVO or any other company for that matter refise to repair. I know of at least two members on here (who shall remain nameless) who have had leaky or damaged dampers replaced/fixed by AVO and had no questions asked.

Yes, alot of places use that wording so the system doesnt get abused.
Thats fair enough.

In the modified car scene coilovers are looked upon being the best way of lowering the car as low as possible.
Coilovers give the user the option to do this, without touching into the budget of airbags etc.
Hence why there are the low end kits meant for this, and the high end kits meant for motorsport.

You mention the torsion bar, thats the biggest problem when it comes to coilover kits on a clio, you uprate the front spring rates but very few people uprate the rear spring rate.
So you turn an oversteer setup into a more understeer biased setting.

Well they didnt put that, so the selling points on the kit are very little.
You say we all know, but if your a buyer looking for a kit and read the sites statement, its not going to tempt you to buy that kit over others.

They warrent them at the discretion, thats a well worded way so they dont go broke from people misusing the warrenty system.
How can you say that they are overated?
The williams oe suspension would of cost thousands to devolp and produce, and that made one of the best handling hot hatches.
So to improve upon that i dont think a cheap kit is going to be the wonder setup.

If the people who had there problems fixed by Avo. Surely they would like to speak out and praise Avos good customer care.
Remaining nameless doesnt sound like an happy customer to me.

i had a leaking rear damper and they repaired it foc and i had it back within a week

I am guessing this was a new product which they repaired for free?
Avo seem to have poor quality control / build quality if they have items which fail when new. I know of a few people this has happened to. If a company skimps and saves on this, It does not instill me with confidence - specially if I was to use one of their products in an environment they are not designed for - i.e. using a coilover not designed for track use, on track.

I can totally understand some may be using the product without any issues. However, for me personally - I wouldnt want to deal with the hassle of having to remove things after fitting, then send them off to be repaired. All of this equates to time and money.

If the people who had there problems fixed by Avo. Surely they would like to speak out and praise Avos good customer care.
Remaining nameless doesnt sound like an happy customer to me.

Remaining nameless means i don't want to say xxxx had this repaired if they don't want others to know bcos at the end of th day who am i to start naming names for those ppl who have had warrenty work carried out, at the end of the day its not my business, if they would like to praise then i'll let them do it.

And as for the wording so the system doesn't get abused, in other words it depends what the head mechanic is feeling like that week.

I read with interest ~~ All the threads about "being covered by warranty".
This in itself is such as grey area.I think you will find, that quite a few of the BIG manufacturers would renegade on their warranties,if they knew whart their Parts were being used, for anything other than normal road use.Even the Motorsport items have no warranty, when used in competition. However most will re~inspect etc etc .if there is a problem ~~ But I think you will find disclaimers etc in there sales information.

it was only a weap on the damping adjuster nothing major,my mate has a rally nova he's used for years and never had a problem with his avo's either,as already said without spending £1200 these have got to be the next best thing and when you think you could have 4 sets for the price of 1 top name set i'd raher use these

I bought a set online of these and fitted yesterday... went on great, only slight stumbling block was the piston stuck onside the coilover!!! Couldnt loosen it no matter how hard I pulled, managed it on the end though thanks to Winston :D

Everything else has fitted perfectly!!

Very interested in these

What's included? Just the front coilovers, or do you get rear shocks too?

Also, how low do these go? I currently have around a 60mm drop on my valver which is about as low as it'll go on springs. Ideally i'd like to drop it more, will these coilovers let me achieve that?

My friends 106 GTi has coilovers on the front and they are rock solid and feel great. The handling of the car feels fantastic, but my valver on spax shocks feels very sloppy and wallowy. How stiff will these be?

Cheers for any advice.

I think you might be a year too late!

you get two front coilovers and two adjustable rear dampers, they go LOW lower than widetrack will allow, so don't worry about height! good purchase imo, but i've only ran mine for road use as i'vee heard of these leaking, but i've not encountered this yet

They were running it as an ongoing discount to WilliamsClio members I think, so give them a ring as you may not be too late, although I think prices have gone up slightly since.

What you will get is this:

Both the rears and the fronts. Both are adjustable from very hard to reasonably soft. The spring platforms are adjustable so you can take the front down as low as you want.

I too have heard issues with them leaking, but their warranty seems to be pretty good in that regard and having done a lot of research before buying them they seemed to be held in high regard for the handling they deliver.

How have those that have been running them found them?

Handle well? have they leaked or had problems?

The car will only be used occasionally, weekends or evenings for a quick blast, and the occasional trackday.

Cheers

Leaked 4 times in 8 months. They are nice though as they are adjustable and can be set to your preference easily, whether at a track or commuting.

When they've leaked I've had very fast service though and no quibbles.

Won't be using the car for commuting, purely fun at the weekend of trackdays so the avo's might be an option.

Just don't want to get them if they're shite?
