Just started getting this weird whining type noise sounds like it coming from the box? It goes if I drop the clutch, and only does it in gear! Definately a lot louder in 4th as well? I know the box is leaking oil but I think its just the cv boot but not sure :( any ideas what this noise could be?

Diff or internal bearing.

Maybe even clutch thrust bearing.

Might do mate, how long do they last once they start whining? and how much would I be looking at to get it fixed :(

Mine lasted about a week before it started jumping outa 2nd, then 2nd went, then did it in 3rd

So could this whinning be related to the copious amounts of oil coming out the bottom of the box?

lol yes mate.

Its likely that its been ran low on oil, and caused bearing damage.

A box will cost you £50-100, I can fit it for £150.

May aswell do clutch as well IMO if it hasnt been done in a while (I wouldnt charge for fitting if im doing the box at the same time btw).

Drove it a minute ago and the whinning had gone :S I think it only does it when warmed up? that normal...

ps would flushing the oil and putting new oil in make it last any longer?

probably not. It might mask the symptoms, but at the end of the day, theres a mechanical fault.

buy something called molly slip (i think it is) thick oil that shuts loud bearing up. I know its only covering up the problem but it worked on my mates gearbox, then just top it up with gear oil (syntrax universal iirc) if your box is leaking slightly, check the level at least once a week, piece of cake to do ;)

My box used to piss out oil, especiallu under hard acceleration. it then began to white like a straight cut dog box...i then changed it before disaster struck.

I used molyslip, slick 50 etc to no avail.. it sounds pretty fubar...get a new box on
