View Full Version : helmets
i plan on doing a few track days next year, do you always need a helmet, and if so, is the best/cheapest way of getting one, off ebay perhaps? and how are they sized?
sorry if i'm being a helmet
Always need a helmet mate....I bought one from the local bike shop for 40 quid it's done me proud for 10 track days and 10 days at york too. :)
not to mention one roll too
As above unless you are racing a bike lid is fine

right, nice one, think my best bet is to get to a bike shop and see what size i need, then get one off ebay or similar.
you need em for york 1/4 mile??? though 1/4 mile was ok without, or is that just pod?
Helmet needed at York yeah...Pod only if you have a rapido car 100+ mph over the line they never check though unless you are going indecently quickly....
How much are the cheaper end of the range for full helmets rather than bike ones? Do most people tend to use bike helmets?

dont think i'll have to worry about that for a while
Don't get a lid of ebay ffs, its there to save your life
Its £40-£50 for a cheapie bike one, stop being tight and get one from a shop.
Race helments start from around £100, afaik they are all nomex lined hence the price

Just to second what Lunner has said. If a helmet is even dropped on the ground it could become next to useless in any subsequent crash. Therefore you are taking a pretty big risk buying a helmet off E-bay as you don't know it's previous history. There is a saying in motorsport... "If you have a ten dollar head, buy a ten dollar helmet", so it is not really an item to skimp on. A bike helmet will do the job for track days but if you get the bug and want to compete then you'll need a helmet with the proper Snell/BS standards as required by the MSA.
Meh, helmet of ebay should be fine as long as it's brand new. All that "what if it's dropped" malarky, "make sure you get it from a shop"
How do you know it's not been banged between manufacturer and shop??
Get any old helmet if it's just for a few things. If you plan on going out on a bike though, try to get a decent one
