View Full Version : Wiring problems 1.4 to 1.8 grr
Hey all, the engine is finally in, all wired up etc but the fuel pump wont prime, been told that this may be because to looms are slightly different! We plugged the looms into the black box near the passenger wing, and 2 wired started to fry on the white plug?
On the valver there are more wires going to the white plug than the 1.4 (there are 2 black ones on the 1.4) It also looks like the wire arrangement is a bit different on the brown plug. The 1.4 is a 94 and the valver is a 91 btw.
My question is, what should we do? Will we need to take the entire loom that goes behind the dash in the valver? Also where does it connect up and how much do I need? Alternatively how do we make it work as it is?

Valver loom, where should it be disconnected to enable it to plug into the 1.4's?

Valver plugs, the white plug only has two wires on the 1.4.. I'll get pics of the 1.4 plugs tomorrow.
Cheers!
To stan in the other thread: What does the white plug do as we have left it disconnected for now..
The pump is now a valver pump, you can't hear it prime though.
The old engine was an injection.
There was an immobliser but that has been sorted, also how do I check the voltage at the points I need to.. eg, ecu, injectors etc?
sounds like the usual live to fuel pump from ecu not matching.
You can put an ign live to it to make it work.
You need to identify which is the fuel pump wire. to do this, check for continuity between pump terminals and each of the wires in the brown multi-plug. off the top of my head its white, and i think its the 4th one in from the left, on the top....of the car plug.
Then run a wire from an ign live (yellow iirc) to the fuel pump wire.
are you getting a spark?
Hi stan, cheers, i'll have a look tomorrow. We couldnt hear the pump that's why we think it's that.
What's the easiest way to check for the spark? Is it something you spray in the TB while someone turns over or by looking at one of the plugs?
ps what are the black wires i fired on the white plug?
god knows about the wires.
Pull one of the plug leads off, put a spare plug in it, and rest it on the engine. crank the engine and check for spark.
should be a strong blue/white one.
or take lead off and whack a screw driver in it and earth and look for the spark :D ( incase you dont have any spare plugs)
cheers going to look after dinner.
When you say check the wires from the pump, there are 4 iirc, which one is the power?
So I check that with a multimeter and a long piece of wire to the brown plug and check the connections?
Thanks.
Had a look but can't seem to see what the heck is up with it! Also there doesn't appear to be a spark which doesn't help anything!

This is the relay box, the immobilizer has been connected up.

This is the valver plug.

Valver whiute plug (addume this is for the clocks, but it's not connected)
Any help greatly appreciated!
thanks.
anyone? Could it still be an immobilizer as there doesn't seem to be a spark either, i thought we had joined the immob wires up though!

how shit. sorry cant help dude. my m8s is basically ready to fire up now. jus gotta sort fuel lines and driveshaft. hope we dont have any probs like this!!
it is shit mate, the wind and rain don't help.
I've found the fuel live using the multimeter, it was missing from the 1.4 loom! Bit worried about the spark tho~!
small update, got the fuel pump going by routing a yellow to the fuel pump live on the valver plug as there was a gap missing, however, the pump stays permanently on when the dash lights come on?
There are also a few other gaps in the valver plug, this may be where the lack of spark is? Anyone know how to get the spark going by routing the wires?
thanks.
Last update for today, it's defo not sparking and i'm not sure why. It's got to be the loom or ECU, I replaced the ECU with one from an R19 that is chipped.
I was checking the loom connections against the one on the old 1.4 and I saw that a big red wire was missing so i bunged that in thinking it would spark but nothing!
Have a look at this pic, you can see the 2 wires, one was a perm live and one was an ign live for the fuel pump.

yes...the pump will run when ign is on...its an ign live
i think you should do it properly with a soldering iron, or at least crimp connectors.
are your injectors firng?
it won't stay like that mate, it's just temporary till i get the thing working.
Is the pump not supposed to be on ign live then?
I'm not sure if the inhectors are firing, how do I check?
I know for a fact it's not sparking and that's probably my biggest problem.

Surely in a crash this could become dangerous as the pump will still churn out fuel as the ign will still be live ?
yes, thats what im saying, its an ign live.
just dont crash
well an ign live is better than a permanent live lol
It should be on the feed from the ecu.

Could be the crank shaft angle sensor. Make sure theres power to it!

the what sensor
do you mean the flywheel sensor ontop of the gearbox ?

just dont crash
my mates clio gtt has its fuel pump on the ign switch too.
Would it not have been easier to nick all the looms from the 16v and use them rather than splicing and dicing ?
there shouldnt be power to the tdc sensor...it gives out a voltage.

Its odd how your having these problems, i just plugged mine in and it tured over lol!
Yeah but if the crank shaft sensor is not being powered, you wont get fuel or a spark.
what do you mean?
the TDC sensor DOESNT require a voltage...it produces a voltage.

i see,
apologies.
