got all the bolts undone as far as i can see, the subframe is dropped on one side, engine miount under battery is undone, driveshafts out, but still cant get the box to seperate from the engine?! :?
is it a case of just really tugging at it, or levering it with a screwdriver or something?!
Any help much appreciated
Is the starter motor off???
Make sure you really have got ALL the bolts undone and you aren't missing one.
Have you got the one by teh o/s driveshaft input, that you have to get to from the other side of the car
If you have done all of the abovve just pull really hard, might be seized on, althoguh i've never known one to be

the o/s bolt is off, just done it... it seems a bit looser, but still wont budge.
we can see a bit of movement, but its not going?!
You need to remove the starter
Get the hammer out
i break things when i start using a hammer
That what hammers are for lol
To work on valvers and williams ...you need a stress valver

You said that and i said to remove the starter, if the starter is off just keep on pulling
Starter doesnt need to come out.
Your probably missing the nut thats under the starter...its easily missed.
If they are all off, it should come apart.
Is the arse end of the starter not bolted to the bracket that bolts to the back of the block?
^^It is^^
That nuts a real pain ...i normally leave it off ...but im a cowboy lol
Yes, it is, but it doesnt mean you have to remove it!
just undo the bolts attaching the starter to the bell housing, and leave the starter in place.

i didnt mean to put the same thing twice! refreshed the page and it posted again.. weird!
we found about 3 more bolts that we missed and have loosened the starter.
now removing the engine mount beneath the battery completely and its looking promising!
then we've got the trouble of replacing the clutch and putting it all back together... then cracking on with the belt!!
haha!! its all good fun and its why we love renaults!
I find its easier manovering the gearbox back into position without the starter on there, but thats just personal preference i suppose

i think we're winning!! at bloody last! :x
got the box seperated after much abuse and leverage, now in the middle of changing the clutch over! Then we've got to put it all back together (there's about 150 nuts/bolts) which could be interesting! then we're gona do the cambelt! not sure if we'll do it tonight or tomorrow, we shall see!
When ever you take any bolts out always replace them once hte object is off, or in the case of cambelt covers, lie the covers on the floor with the bolts through the holes, you know exactly where everything goes then

You are going to try and do the cambelt with the engine in!? Good luck! It would have been much easier to have rented an engine crane and lifted the engine out. Do the gearbox/clutch and the cambelt then plonk it back in.

Would of been easier to take the engine out and then you get easy access to the box to get it off. :P
Normally a gearbox change shoudl take 10 hours if not less, i've been told cambelt a few hours, its just fiddly
Talking a good 2 days to take engine out and pout it all back in plus do teh work, and alot more work
