Just run into a small problem -

Had a diesel Gearbox (from an Lreg Clio 1.9D) put into my L reg 16v Clio.
The speedometer does not work :(
The speedo connection which is in the 16v Box does not seem to exist in the Diesel...can anyone shed any light on this?

Do Diesel gearboxes require different speedometer cables?
If not - how do diesel clios measure the speed?
Any fixes to my problem?

Thanks in advance to all who help.

im reckoning the cable is different?

Has the box made it any quicker, whats the difference?

as above, and is that the reason you put a diesel box in, for better performance?

I thought they were longer ratios which surely couldnt make it any faster accelerationwise, but top end might be better, and arent they ment to be really strong so they last longer?

Lewis_Willy2:
I am looking into the fact the cable might be different - tomorrow being Sunday I will not get any answers till Monday - speaking to a gearbox specialist.

Foz:
My last gearbox was in a bad state (previous owners had not put any oil in it) and therefore 5th gear (furthest one away from oil and I believe to be made out of Aluminium composite - other are bronze iirc) got shagged.
As for current feel of car -
Shorter first gear - can accelerate really quickly.
2nd Gear seems similar to as per before
3rd / 4th and 5th seem to pull more cleanly - although havent really had a chance to test this.

Again , must mention previous gearbox was in real bad state so like for like comparison can not be made in total

Bill. :
Put the Diesel Box in for two reasons
1. I needed a new gearbox and was only one available at the time
2. Longer ratios - should give me better fuel economy.

Nick 16v:
Longer gear ratios yes - but where ??
From what i can tell at the current time - 1st is shorter 2nd/3rd seem similar to before - and 4th and 5th seem longer. so seems ideal in terms of getting performance lower down as well being able to cruise more efficiently doing motorway mileage

At least this is what I hope for - will get a proper story up when all works are complete and finished and I have managed to do run the car for a week (normally about 500 miles of travelling)

AS PER MY ORIGINAL THREAD - ANYONE BE OF ANY ASSISTANCE IN ANSWERING MY Q'S

Much appreciated.

be good to see the specs on the gearing when you've finished this matey

be good to see the specs on the gearing when you've finished this matey :wink:defenetly, i was also thinking of this converssion, i thought the ratios would be closer in the diesel ???

you will need to run the cable from a diesel and the speedo too

or you should be able to use R5 GTT clocks and speedo cable

hmmm cant u just swap the speedo drive over??

i know jesus didnt run diesel speedo or cable with his diesel box.

if it was a diesel box

To All

As mentioned previously will do a proper review of the box once all the works are completed.

in addition to this. The diesel lump was not a straightforward fix - the underside of the diesel gearbox has a smaller frame around the flywheel - leaving a small chunk of the flywheel exposed. Not sure if this is specific to some diesel gearboxes. Please see attached Photograph.

I believe this could be one of the reasons of my problems also - due to unflush fitting - would suggest that the diesel boxes came in a number of varieties unless someone else can confirm that this is how they are.

Smudger:
I dont think your solution will work. The speedo drive in the diesel gearbox is not there. I am unsure if this is just how diesel boxes are of if mine has been broken. If your solution is correct - a diesel speedo cable will have at the endofit the drive to go in the gearbox.

After speaking with a gearbox specialist - the speedo drives in this gearbox are mounted from the inside. therefore you cannot take them out and interchange. you have to take apart gearbox to get to it.

I have spoken with jesus and he has no recollection of speedo being different in anyway.
Not sure at this moment in time if mine was broken - or if in fact it ever existed - or if the box i have requires a different speedo cable.

Finally,
I will do a proper review of this sometime after xmas - once I have driven the car a fair distance (1k or so)

Currently I am having my Diesel gears put in the the Valver Casing and then put back on the car. Hopefully this should sort out any of the problems I have had (i.e. speedo and exposed flywheel)

Would be great if anyone can confirm if their diesel box has the flywheel exposed from underneath.

Huge expense at the moment - but if all goes well i should save a lot in petrol - will report back and let everyone know how it goes. In the mean time would love to get more info from people who have diesel boxes in their valvers/willys.

Finally - i have got my car back and all gears working.

I ended up getting my 16v box rebuilt. This was due to the many problems faced above. I have no additional R19 Mount!! (only a hillpower dogbone) and the refitting of the above has led to as near as possible to no movement from engine/gearbox.

It is a shame i didnt install a diesel box because was looking forward to have a valver with a diesel box on it - however cost and time implications have led to me getting the original box sorted.

As for some advice to all -
I have noticed a few valvers/williams with a lot of engine / gearbox movement when accelerating / decelerating - my car infact has close to no movement what so ever. I believe over the years the movement is a result of bolts becoming loose in nature. Therefore would advise anyone with great movement to go through the procedure of tightening / or getting new bolts.

Another key item I have noticed - the the bolts for the dogbone mount should have the head of the bolt on the side of the exaust downipe - this has resulted in getting rid of the knocking noise many people experience which is a result of the bolt end hitting the downpipe on acceleration/deceleration. This means the bolts for the dogbone mount enter at the side of the downpipe (downpipe may have to be removed in order to do this as mine was off at the time).

Finally, The items above may have been covered before but thought I would just mention them anyway.

Javidan, I still have the diesel box, I'll get some pics and keep it for a bit if you want it at some stage. 2nd gear is ****ed, but you can still change into it, all other gears are okay from what I remember, so I'll keep hold of it but also get some pics too.

TheJesus You are a legend -

I am real pleased with the cars perfomance today...did 100miles in it - seems real responsive - (did less than a third of a tank for 100miles im sure thats pretty decent)

Keep the box for now mate - as i said before im either going willy or 17poo (ph1 or ph2 cup) next - so dont want to spend too much on the valver...i think personally the diesel box will need something wiv more torque - i can already feel the lack of torque lower down on the valvers wouldnt want to risk getting economy at the price of acceleration on the valver - would ruin the car :P

If i go for a willy - may well end up getting a diesel box for that.

Definitely got to see your motor sometime in 2007 ;)
