Below are pics of the first bonnet and tailgate to be taken from the molds I had made up. You will notice strengthening ribs on the insides of both panels..these greatly increase the rigidity.

I think the prices will be £150 for a bonnet and £175 for a tailgate...this will be confirmed next week along with leads times (I will probably get them made in batches of 5, the first lot starting next week).

I brief show of hands to get an idea of prelimanary numbers would be appreciated!

Cheers,
Craig

I'll have a tailgate deffo mate...let me know how you want payment...can do a bank transfer easy enough.

Will they survive a delivery service...how rigid are they?

stan
10-12-2006, 00:12
Yeah they are defo rigid enough...and they will be packaged appropriatly.

Im waiting to hear back from my GF bloke, as the one in the pic doesnt have the raised section around the inside, which the rain/water seal presses against...so technically as it is, that one would leak!

As soon as ive finalised dealings with him, I'll let you know.

Doors could be made on request aswell

Martin

ohhhh doors  ....pity you'd have to whack a heavy cage in to make them safe.... :(

stan
10-12-2006, 00:20
LOL

The tailgates just require a wee bit more work mate then they will be ready.

Tho...i did want to have mine on before anyone else lol  :D

You got perspex for them?

Martin
10-12-2006, 00:25
not yet....I'll order a rear screen I think but keeping the rest of the windows stnd. Should be a good 15kg saving on the tailgate alone I reckon... 8)

stan

TBH an appropriatly sized flat sheet would do it...if ur DIY savvy, its easy enough.

Id have a tailgate as said previously. concerned that it still looks a bit rough in the pics. TBH for 175 id want something thats gonna fit well, seal well with OE seals and windows. Im not really wanting to bond in the windows etc.

Also concerned that the edges of the tailgate by the lights might not be very rigid and start to flex at speed.

Just my thoughts, but if these issues are non-existant then ill defo have one! :D

(im gonna be soo skint after xmas!)

Martin
10-12-2006, 14:16
aye as stew says I was gonna use stnd seal with a polycarb.....I presume it's not gonna snap at the edge when I'm fitting the seal.

stan
10-12-2006, 14:25
Stew, where do you think it looks rough? the inside "lip" has been purposefully left larger than standard so u have extra to bond onto...or u can trim it back to use the OE rubber seal...I would recomend boding.

There isnt going to be anymore flex than there is on the extremities of a GF bonnet...these are suprisingly rigid.

If you have any reservations about fitting them yourself, then please dont buy them. Like I said originallly...I had these made for ME...it was only when people showed an intrest that I offered them for sale. Im not selling them as a money making thing...just trying to help the DIY enthusiasts...so again, if you dont fall into this catagory..dont buy them.

As for price...as above, if you think £175 is too expensive, dont buy them. Not trying to sound harsh, but thats the price they are for sale at...either go elsewhere and have your own made (more than likely to a lesser quality, and defo more expensive), or keep the OE unit.

"you pays your money, you makes your choice".

stew
10-12-2006, 14:47
i was just thinking about the lip yeah. so this could be cut back and the OE seal used? or not?

yeah im still interested for sure, and understand you are doing this for yourself and helping out anyone that wants them.

best way to fit these with bonnet pins yeah? 2 at the top, 2 at the bottom?

or to put it another way...how are you fitting yours?

cheers, and sorry if the previous post sounded harsh or whatever. was just curious about them. :)

stan

lol...dont be daft!

Aye probably 4 pins...tho I will probably have two coming out horzontally which will locate on the front are (i.e. either side of the renault badge...towards the sides)...so you slide it on, then drop it down onto two at the rear ala the "normal" way.

as for tailgates, I dont see whay you cant use the rubber...but its liekly easier to just bond an appropriatly sized piece of perspex on.

the raised section i mentioned which seals against the rubber on the car...he is going to take molds of that, then replicate it, then bond it to the inside of the panels...so its "3D"..not just a skin. I guess this will help rigidity also..but tbh they are fine as they are.

I'll get more pics when he's done one like that.

i can see 0-60 + 1/4mile times start to tumble big time
if u guys go for the bonnet boot n doors
(roughly)what over all weight would u be saving with all of the above in fibreglass rather than normal

surely these are not safe for everyday use ? unless u are mad hardcore nutters

stan
10-12-2006, 15:13
I really wouldnt fit these or perspex on an everyday car...it draws attention as being a weakness to passer-by tossers/twocers.

They see perspex, they will crack it...they see pins, they will undo them!

As for weight..I havnt weighed them yet...but they are SO light in comparison compared to the OE ones...especially the bonnets!!

It like comparing paper to brick lol.

If you go for the doors i would have thought side impact bars might be a wise idea. I know cages already have them but somehow construct another bar into it?

Plenty of women drivers on the road ready to smack into you

Not women i would be worried about...more falling off the track into a barrier at 100mph lol

In any case, the std door will do feck all anyway...

Most full-shell kitcars are fully glass-fibre including the doors. All the ones ive driven have just had a cage. Nobles, Ginettas etc etc...all GF/composite doors and space frame/cage.

i think if u go for fibreglass bonnet, boot and doors thats a saving of about 40 + kgs i beleive! i want

will u do a package for doors, tailgate and bonnet? 8)

stan
10-12-2006, 16:52
I can...but the doors wouldnt be ready for another month or two...he's very busy, and worked hard to sort these at relatively short notice.

stew
10-12-2006, 17:15
nice one craig.

i have a GF skin bonnet already, and it weighs like 4kgs compared with around 15 for the OE item. sooo light. hope for the same for the tailgate.

yeah i wouldnt fit it to an everyday car. track cars arent a problem tho.

stan
10-12-2006, 17:22
cools :D

Im sure the standard one is more than 15kgs?? never weighted one like, but they are fooooking heavy!

stew
10-12-2006, 18:12
im sure the std bonnet is around 15-20kgs.

dunno about the tailgate.

ill defo have a tailgate craig, as long as it has the raised bit as you said to seal with the rubber, so it dont leak.

cool...i'll get pics when they tailgates are fully done.

If the tailgate can be sealed and wont leak then i may be up for one.

Ive already sourced a bonnet elsewhere whilst you were sorting these ones out as i needed one asap.

Keep me posted

Correct. My one weighed in at 17 kgs, with the release mechanism and hinges, etc. being about another kilo you could also ditch.

I've already had a GF bonnet for a while but would be interested in a tailgate when they are ready please.

Cool...well seen as its the wrong side of xmas for hobby orientated purchases, i'll take orders in say the first week of jan. That way the tailgates will be fully ready, and everyones wallets will be on the mend!

stew
11-12-2006, 20:28
you mean everyones wallets will be empty...but hey!

everyone is too rushed before xmas anyway, and the post is a total nightmare, so jan sounds good to me.
