Driving today, its pretty hot 28 deg and cars getting a little warm...normal tolerances, changing gear no probs....BUT on coming to rest, it would not go in reverse, 1st or 2nd. Turned the engine off and engaged clutch, went into all gears. Again got home same problem, turned off engine and restarted, changed gear sweet as a nut...is it the heat...I know the clutch cable is 2 weeks old but this only appears to happen when hot :?

Did you have a new clutch Nick?

My car is exactly the same since my rebuild. As the car gets hot the gears become harder and harder to select.

No, I really...really am getting pissed off though, fancy having to turn your engine off to change gear

What oil is the gearbox running? Might be time for an upgrade?

Don't know, is it normally changed during a full service??

I had the same tranelf before and after engine work.

Not normally. Its generally just topped up at the majority of places. I tend to change mine about once a year with fully synthetic competition oil.

Its not uncommon for a 10 year old car to still be on the original oil. As you can imagine it will be way past its best.

Sorry to be thick but how many litres are required, any recommendations, that I can buy in France?

3 litres is what you need for the Renault JC & JB gearboxes.

I would recommend Millers, but failing that (if its not available in France) then stick to the recognised makes, like Castrol, Silkolene etc. Although I am sure Elf will do a fully synthetic gearbox oil and being in France will probably be cheaper than other makes.

Did you have a new clutch Nick?

No, and I suspect its done 150K+ although tonight it was fine, my old man thinks changing the oil and removing the shit should help

ive had 2 clios and went thru 3 gearboxes and im afraid not engaging when hot is a sign of a dying box a rebuild is not too far away

So, if the gearbox is going, HOW much to buy and fit a new one?

Yep interested to know this to! Gearbox went completely yesterday.
Guessing a recon unit is the best way to go?

Get a new one from reno. Only the casings are reconditioned. All the internals are new. About 500 quid i think. Dont bother with seconds hand. You can fit them and they can go the next day.

Not sure i necessarily agree that not being able to engage gears is a sign of a broken / dying gearbox. I personally think mine just isnt lines up right, as before it was taken off the car it was fine, and now i have difficulty with 1st and 5th.

I think if i were you Nick, i'd do what mark saids first off by replacing the oil and then if it still does that then i'd say it's a new unit!

From reno they are £600 so what ever that will be in euro's!

Just buy a straight cut box, think that will sort it, does anyone know how much these are?

Good point Danny, I like KS, am not prepared to write the box off yet without trying oil change.....fingers crossed
