Yes always put new tyres on the back.

Mark runs 195's on the front and 185's on the rears. But no sure about the other way round.

Personally id just get two new 185 55 15 micheling pilot exalto 2's for the back and bring the the tyre forwards.

What you got on at the moment, becuase you dont want to be having vastly differnet tyres front and back.

If you dont want to pay 100 each for 185's then go 195's but get them all round.

Goodyear GSD3's!

I would go for the Goodyear Eagles my self. Absolute bargain price and one of the very best all round tyres you can buy.

However, I would disagree with Stromba in putting the best tyres on the rear. I always put the best tyres on the front end and am never too bothered about whats on the rear. The Clio lives and dies by its front end grip IMO.

What size does the Williams have from new?

Mark_Ritchspeed

185/55/15. Most people tend to just fit 195/50/15's though as they are cheaper and a better range of decent tyres available. They are obviously also slightly lower profile and wider.

mark.. what are you running front and back, and at what psi?
to you mess with tyre pressure for the track ?

Mark_Ritchspeed

For road use and wet weather I run Eagle 195/50/15's all round with 32psi in the front and 26psi in the rear. If its particularly wet I may drop them down 2psi all round.

For dry tarmac I run 195/50/15 Yoko AO48's up front with 34psi and 185/55/15 Colway semi-slicks on the rear with 24psi.

Will probably be trying the new Toyo 888R's next time for the front as the Yoko's are a little too soft and tend to break up on track.

Can't believe how cheap the tyres are on that mytyres web site. Just found some tyres on there for my R19 for £88.90, even the Pirelli's i run at the moment are on there for just over £140, how comes they can do them so cheap?

Now i can get some cheaper tyres for my 19 and splash out on some proper driving tyres for the Williams......... see what it's like to drive when you can get traction :D

Please remember though mark, you will be perfectly capable of catching the rear end if it steps out. Some others arnt so skilled. Unless you are a very competent driver and are sure you know what the limits of your car is i have to say for safety you should put the new tyres on the back.

Not so important in the summer, but in winter i would be more careful.

Mark do you rate Goodyear eagles over PE2's? I have always fitted michelins, due mainly to myself being a Williams geek.

Would 4 new goodyear eagle tyres be a good buy in 185 55 15 size?

Im reticnet to try 195 50 15,s. My 0002 has the original Pilot HX's on it and to be honest i find it much more stable than 0200 on PE2's which i find has a wblly feel at high speeds.

Any comments?

Only thing to be aware of KS is that Goodyear don't make the GSD3 iterant of the F1 in 185 fitment, only 195/50. They do the previous GSD2 in 185 though, but I've never been sure of the performance difference.

Dont think I have driven a car with the PE'2's on. Once I get a tyre I like I just tend to stick to it. Having said that I really liked the old Toyo Proxie T1S's for the wet weather grip and lots of other people slated them. I went through about 5-6 sets of them in a couple of years.

I will probably just stick to the Eagle F1's come renewal time, although I may try the new Toyo T1R's, which have been getting great reviews from track-day people.

so £33 a tyre i might as wel get 195/50 goddyears then???

Mark_Ritchspeed
29-04-2005, 15:20
At that price, I really dont see how you could buy anything else? Not only are they extremely good at everything, they are the same price as a cheap budget tyre.

I recommend Bridgestone Potenzas S02 195/50/15's, the grip is phenomenal wet or dry - although they do seem to wear out quickly!

Dont ask me about tyres, my Pilot SXGT's have done 25,000 miles and still have 4.5mm of tread on them. I dont drive fast enough to question which tyres i use.

So no-one has a second opinion on the Avon's? :(

Will be getting some new tyres soon and need to decide between avon's and goodyear...

Ive never used avons or heard anything about them. I know alot of ppl use the goodyears

i have to say for safety you should put the new tyres on the back.

I'm not sure that's such great advice Stromba. I see what you're saying about having dodgy rear tyres on the back, but I'd still recommend having the best tyres on the front.

Can you imagine trying to brake hard in an emmergency, on a wet road, in a non-ABS car, with crappy tyres on the front!

With a front-driver, there's also the the fact that the front tyres are responsible for everything; putting down the power, steering the car and stopping 950kgs or more, some times all at once. The rears just follow their lead.

KingStromba

It is good advice. In fact its the advice tyre manufacturers supply with their tyres. I have a michelin leaflet infront of me now.

If the 'more worn' tyres are moved to the fron, but have a legal amount of tread then there will be no issue with braking. You assume that the old tyre moved to the front are worn and useless.

This is not the point. The whole point is that if fresher tyres are put on the front it give an impression of grip at the front tof the car, that is not reflected on the back of the car. Ie if you go into a corner, the front of the car will grip but when adhesion is lost the loss comes from the back first. Ie the back swings out.

You can argue all you like, but its easier to control a slide front the front of the car than it is the rear, particularly when cornering at speed.

All you have to do if you understeer is lift off slightly and the front will tuck in. You can even apply a bit of brake and the font will tighten its line. This is the natuaral reaction most drivers would have. Lift off and brake.

Try lifting off and braking when the rear has stepped out. Youll head for the nearest ditch. the fact is you need more skill to control a slide from the back and the last thing you want to do is lift off. You have to balance the throttle and use the steering to correct the slide. Most drivers dont have this skill.

Hence the new tyres go on the rear unless you are confident you can drive like Mark

I learnt this the hard way.

Pity I can't follow my own advice...my front left looks like a slick.

Will be getting Goodyear Eagles, just 'cos they're so cheap on mytyres.

Zollo

I suppose if the tyre manufacturers recommend that way, it's gotta be the right way!

My new ones will still be going on the front :D

i had avons zz1 in 205/45/16s on me valver..fantastic in the dry, fukkin shit in the wet.

mine had the original 185/55s on when i bought it...i find the 195 pe2s coupled with the coilovers give a much better ride, a lot more stable on high speed corners the tyres let u know wots goin on , they give u a bit more tramlining than the old hx pilots, but its not excessively more

Exaltos 2's for me in the 185 fitment, prolly go for the 195's next as I seem to have gone through the front 2 pretty quickly and they are not cheap...lol bloody Gaz and his trackdays

My car is very unstable at high speeds. Im sure the PE2's in combination with SXGT's is a bad combo.

please tell me anyone know about these toyo proxes 888 i think they r?

Mark_Ritchspeed
05-05-2005, 20:22
ALthough I havent personally used them, from what I have heard they are very similar to Yoko A048's, but maybe a slight improvement all round.

The things I can gaurantee they will do:
1. Cost @ £100 a tyre
2. Grip like f **k in the dry
3. Wear out in absolutely no time

You may also be better off looking at non-Japanese made semi-slicks, as ALL Jap tarmac based competition tyres work best with more than 1.5degs negative camber. Wthout lots of negative camber they wear very quickly on the outer edges if used on track.

willy55
07-05-2005, 21:45
mark what if they were just road use only still wear quickly????

Mark_Ritchspeed
07-05-2005, 21:56
For road use only I would expect no more than 2000 miles out of them. I will overheat them within about 10 mins of track driving and once they actually go off they are hopeless. Also they tramline like mad on bumpy and uneven surfaces.

I certainly wouldnt recommend them for road use and to be honest unless your competing I wouldnt use them for track days. The costs involved are just plain silly IMO.
