Who ever swapped the sump on this engine have no idea or a serious lack of respect when they swapped the sumps over. The amount of over used silicon in the oil was unreal. I was wondering why my oil pressure guage was so low (max of 3bar on cold start). I wanted to sort it out before it damaged the bearing or similar. I got looking and found tones of silicon hanging out the side (where the engine block and sump meet).

After messing about for 2hours dropping the sump (what a knightmare!), I found this;

What a joke. Anyone ever dropped a sump in situe? Did you drop the sub frame?

Anyway, after picking about 5strands of silicon out of the oil pickup, I cleaned the sump pan, cleaned all the old silicon from the surface channels and applied new silicon to the channels. It's been fine since giving 5.5bar at 1,500rpm on cold start and 6bar at around 2,500rpm on cold start. (y)

Your thoughts please :roll:

my oil pressure on idle is about 3-4 bar on a cold start

is that not normal then?

Mine and quite a few other peoples are the same. You are not alone.

Just another common problem with these cars tbh.

I wouldn't worry about it tbh, so long as the red oil light isn't coming on.

ah thats ok then. na the light doesnt come on and oil pressure rises to about 4-5 bar when pushing the car when warm so not all bad

ive took the sump out in situe to put big end bearings in (twice) i took the engine mount off and hoisted the engine up at the belt end and it wiggled out

is this his old 1.8 that was in his rsi? thougjht that was in lees car? the engine ran fine in basses car and he never had any problems with it afaik, did'nt have a working oil pressure gauge tho....

yes, I have lee's car now. In order to get the sump off I had to remove the the engine mount and gearbox mount, hoist the engine as high as possible (until the exhaust downpipe hit the sub frame) then lever the engine towards the gearbox side as my mate jiggled it about for about 5minutes.

I get about 3.5 bar at idle on cold start. I get around 6bar on cold start at 2,500rpm. Once it's hot (100*C), it wont go past 3bar. I think that's ok although I would still like to see the oile pressure at around 4bar at 4,000rpm at 100*C. Smooth engine still though and definitly one of the quicker ones.

Lee mentioned that the garage that put the engine in changed the sump from his old engine to Bass's old engine. Obviously they didn't have much of an idea of how to seal a sump without blocking off the oil feed. Not impressed with that too much but it's fine now. Hybrid soon anyway 8)

lol yeah the garage changed it over when they put the engine in!

tis a quick engine so make sure you sell it for a good price when you hybrid it.

Ahh rite thatl be the difference, i undid the downpipe from the manifold so i had a lot more 'lift' with the engine so only had to take the engine mount off
