i work for Audi and tbh theyre not the easiest of jobs (especially if quattro) i think that book figure you have is for the quattro. Do you have a ramp to do the work?

Best method is to drop the subframe by undo-ing bottom ball joints from wishbones, arb drop links and steering rack. You will also have to disconnect the pas pipe at the rack and pull that out of the way. Obviuosly if its quattro you have the transfer box to deal with. Box will then drop out with an engine beam in place. Its basically a lot like a valver/willy but on a larger scale.

You can try undo-ing the n/s front wishbone bolt and swinging it out of the way and wriggling it out through the gap without touching the subframe but iirc ive only been able to do this on fwd 5 speed A3's.

Sorry about the essay but i hope it helps!
