right i nearly bought one of these other day but then read up how some are faster than others....

i still dont understand which is which tho..

you have mk1 172
mk2 172
172 cup
182
182 cup
cliosport cup

what the **** is the differances between all these i basically want the lightest one as i know some weigh around 1100kg and some only 1000kg

when looking on autotrader/ebay etc they never mention which one it is and they all look the same to me

from what i can work out the fastest and lightest is the cliosport cup which came out in 2002 and was 172bhp

the one to avoid is the cliosprt 172 mk2 which weighs 100kg more.... but was made in same year

how do you tell these two apart when buying

also the cliosport 172 mk1 which came out in 2000 apparantly is 172bhp but 50 kg lighter than the mk2 so making it faster

which is the one i should go for and can anyone please tell me the differances between these french machines as im totally confused as to how to tell them apart thnaks

and please dont anyone say "just buy a williams" cause i tried to do that today and just missed out on one

mk1 172 or a mk2 172 cup, both 172 bhp and both about the lightest, but mk1 u get leather and airbags etc but the cup u dont!

right so for example this one says its a 172 cup

but its actually not as the 172 cup came out in 2002? right?

this is why its so hard to know what the car is thats actually for sale cause people dont seem to even know themselves

the original 172 is a PHASE 1 172, then the cups only came in 172 PHASE 2 form. these are both around the same weight.

cup-only in silver and blue, withb turinis as standard. no xenons, air con (late ones had climate), leather or abs and ONLY in mk2.

mk2 172's non cup not available in the 'cup blue'.

mk1 172's, best looking  , lighter than mk2, all the goodies of a full fat RS Clio except Xenons. Some models came with a lightweight ally bonnet and shift light.

Hope this helps

Earliest Mk2 172 i have seen is a Y reg.

so if any i should aim for a mk1 172 bout w-x reg in terms of speed, lightweight, goodies and price

agreed fellas?

having owned both....i would honestly hang on for a Williams. BUT if you're set on an RS Clio i'd go for the cup, not got the goodies of a full fat, but it's the face lift and a bit 'rawer'. Depends what you're after really!

Ste has got an absolute bargain, and only he will know it!!

matt uk
17-11-2006, 00:33

I know all the mk2's inside out - been watching the progress from the first mk1 172 review in evo way back...

Its not that hard to figure out its just the arse holes as stated who slap extra names on the end just to make them more noticable.

For me it'd be a hard choice between the mk1 172 exclusive and a mk2 172 cup in silver ( I like to be different and for me those are the two rarities in the entire clan)

If you need any help identifying fella give us a shout

17-11-2006, 00:38
 I've done more than my fair share of it before myself.....needs must and all that. Not long til i'm back in the game i'm sure!

matt uk
17-11-2006, 00:45
give it a week and you'll be cutting your wrists over selling it at that price

I thought it was 172 PS, not BHP?

Your right - they only actually have something like 168bhp..

And people can't understand why a well kept willy can keep up with one

Yeah, Williams Mk1s corner better anyway. Haha. I remember when i had my Valver and I raced my mate in his 172 off of cliosport. He thought it would be a easy victory, there was actually nothing in it and he was gutted. I have a video of it from inside his car and he was like

i suppose i could get a w reg on bout 50k ish miles for around 3k if i shop about dont wana pay more than that really

and if the mk1 is one of the fastest and lightest thats kinda already made up my mind

my mate paid 4k for his mk1 172 which was pretty standard, had 70k on it but had a brand new engine from renault.... no where near as quick or as good at handling as the hybrid though

The ONLY trick to buying a Clio Sport. is to get one that is pushing out 172 bhp.

Most dont. The ones that do are fast.

none make 172bhp... they are pants as standard

Agree^, a tweaked 172 cup is the only mk2 I'd have....MAYBE a trophy at a push.

172's are faster than a Williams and Hybrid right up until the point where you line them up and the F7R beats it. It's only Mk2 owners that cant accept this, but I think we all now know what the quicker car is with the better tuning potential.

Plattsy
17-11-2006, 11:44
most mk2 owners are on cliosport and are geeks though and probably cant drive properly..... (no offence jesus)
im sure a properly driven mk2 can be quick shame they just weigh alot
Besides there horrible to drive in comparison to my old hybrid

J o n

none taken lad, i've been out on the convoys to shows with them and the amount of young kids driving them like they have stolen it and trying to prove a point is pathetic. some scrote almost hit me on the way to FCS 05 and had to use the hard shoulder... sure some of you on here remember it.

Power to weight is a fallacy too, they don't make 172bhp, they consistently make 166bhp as standard, where a good Williams will make over 160bhp, hence why they always get spanked come 1/4 mile time. I couldn't lose Gaz's nana on the bypass near me when we had a short run, they tune up so well anyway but factor in the weight and it's a giant slayer really.

I dont want to get into an argument but jills 172 1/4 miled at 15.5. Doesnt sound fast but when you consider that it was Jill driving, it was her first and last go at 1/4 miling and she didnt nail the changes like someone like Martin might do and had all the tools and seats in, then you can see it would do low 14's all day long in the right hands.

It certainly had the legs on my williams. There are fast ones out there. But pretty rare.

15.5 to low 14's? hope Jills not reading this Rob, or you might be getting slapped for insulting her driving ability! lol

Unless she really really messed things up then 15 dead would be about right in full trim for a really quick one and if it was a good launch but slow changing then it's only going to make 10'th of a second up realistically... she may have however Northy'd it on her forst attempt in which case ignore everything I said, but quickest 172 to date I know of with zero mods was Paddy's, which was uber fast.

Martin
17-11-2006, 12:36
Kev's old silver 172 did 14.6 with rear bench & spare out just beat Paddy's time IIRC ....either way not bad!

Plattsy
17-11-2006, 22:07
dont valvers do 15s though? ive seen valvers hit similar 1/4 times to 172s... people reckon there fast as... a lad i know has a 182 and cos i said it wasnt fast he had a reyt fit over it..... even when they are beaten why do they not admit it?
Most of the mk2 peeps ive seen are 40yr olds who live with there parents and have never been with a girl lol...

Andy
18-11-2006, 11:43
done a 14.8 in my willy and that is the most standard one on the site ....

i love claires 172 cup does feel quick ...even though i wont admit it
