As many of you know, I have bought another valver which is currently under going an overhaul to get it ready for the track. As far as my every day valver is concerned, I've got to the point with it where there are no more modifications I can make to it without losing its reliability and practicality. I've done pretty muvh every mod I can, and got the most performance I think it can give.

I've owned it for 2 years now and am thinking of selling and buying, (drum roll please - lol) a 4x4 saff cossie. I want something with more performance and have always loved the saff's.

I'd like to keep the clio but realistcally, the drive at my new house will only fit 3 cars, plus the track car in the garage so there is little space for it and I couldnt honestly see myself ever driving it. I dont wanna leave it to rott, I'd rather someone else enjoy the work I've done and will still have the track car for some clio action.

What you guys reckon, am I going insane or should I just bite the bullet and do it?? Help me out - then I can balme you lot when I'm not happy with my choice.

LOL

Wash your mouth out!!

It would have to be magenta. Possibly consider a moonstone one.

As for evo money, I dont want a car that is expensive to look after with too many electronics an one thing an another.
My education was around cossie's, so I'd never shy away from trying to fix one myself, plus they are icon cars.

Reliabilty issues will ALWAYS plague cossies, no matter how much money you throw at them. I've had one and would only have another if I had some serious spare money (like 30k) and it was in escort WRC variety.

Don't do it

Thats what air fuel ratio meters are for Pikie!!

Plus with my other halfs knowledge and experience, I dont think I'll go far wrong do you??

Any turbo'd car is a totally different breed to a NA car an they cant be driven hard all the time.

Its only when you start winding actuators up without putting your hand in your pocket and spending money on making sure not only that there is enough fuel to run the extra boost but that the engine can cope with it that they go bang.

my mates had his 2wd saph now for about a year and its been on the road for about 4months out of that year, its been rebuilt several times and off the road hundreds of times. The car is basically a brand new car, hes thrown some serious cash at it but it still keeps breaking....

Cossie everday of the week. I agree if you buy a minter thats not been messed with and mod it sensibly upgrading in the right places then theres no reason why it cant be as reliable as the next modded car. They do have a bad stigma attached to them but as an example everybody says VAG cars are reliable but i work for Audi and can tell you that theyre only as reliable as a ford or a renault but in a lot of cases more difficult to work on.

Anyway i know what id rather have, cossie or valver? tough one

yeah they are mate, with a dog-leg box. But they are brutal machines...not gobsmacking in a straight line but the noise they make and the way they go around corners is something else. They make any cossie look like a pile of shite.

To this day i've never driven anything as brutal around corners....it just grips all day long, and you can balance understeer by feeding it throttle and getting ready to catch the back. Had one hairy moment on a roundabout, braced myself for the oncoming lampost but the front end finally gripped and i was off again. Superb drivers cars..

Slower than a delta integrale round Anglesey as driven by Tiff Needell though. Which was actually slower than Martins and Winstons fastest laps in their Clios. And actually slower than a girl in a mk1 MR2 that i know. So they cant be 'that' brutal.

56.7 and 56.9 for the Integrale and M3 respectively. There is a girl on the mk1 mr2 forums that can get round in a supercharged mk1 mr2 in 56 dead which i thought was a good effort for an emotional mood sack.

Different type of drive really. In a straight line the hybrids etc would rinse them. But around some of my favourite roads the M3 was certainly faster than any of the clios i've owned. Having said that, at the tighter stuff the clio felt quicker. The M3 felt a little lazy at the tight bends...probably cos it's quite a bit quicker.

Interesting post about the Integrale vs M3, i remember watching it. At the 'ring this year there was stripped E30 M3 on standard engine, slicks and uprated suspension running consistent 8 minute something laps.

I doubt there are many renault owners on here who would swap there Mk1 for a mk3, if they wernt allowed to gain from selling the mk3 and had to drive it.

Thats just ****ing dumb.

I could afford to buy whatever i wanted at the time of my del sol purchase, i could have got a dc2 integra or ctr, but i wanted the sol.

Just because someone wants something older doesnt mean they cant afford the newer options.

Theres a bit of a difference between "last years bmw" and an e30 m3.

Couldn't have put it better myself! E30 M3's are well known for being one of the greatest drivers cars built. Also, a good E30 M3, or EVO2 cost a hell of a lot more than an E36 M3. Some of the rarer E30's cost more than E46's!!!

We aren't talking about £2k shit box Renault's that every spotty teenager can afford to buy and run. These are specialist cars.

I sold my E30 M3 to someone who flew over from the Czech Republic and drove it back, an indication of just how rare they are in mint condition. And mine was far from some of the MINTY mint E30's out there.

Some very naive point of views being put across here. What you make of a BMW driver is neither here of there in terms of how the car drives. They are one of the leading manufacturers in the world for a reason, and currently one of a very small number that is still making money. That's fact, not point of view.

If i spent 8k on a car id want to be able to lap Anglesey faster than an asbo ST or new golf gti. The 'FACT' is that the e30 M3 cant. No point having fun if some rep is handing you your ass on a plate and making you look like a flat cap enthusiast.

How did this thread get onto a debate about BMW's?????

Lots of people including myself prefer older cars because they have more character. Not because they cant afford newer. There are lots of things I could buy with my savings, but it's a personal choice to look at older cars.

as for the E30 BM, iconic car, I dont care what anyone says, the new ones just dont look as beefy and mean. Personally not the first thing I'd go for, as I'd probably slide it sideways into a wall or summat!! LOL

David_Harrison

Newer is always better. Tyre and engine technology has moved on. Anti rattle dashes are now available from hondas research facility apparently.

Old = slow. Get a new car go faster.

Fusionrs
19-11-2006, 23:37
The bonus of any older, and preferably cult car (cosworth/E30 M3/etc) is that theres gonna be minimum depreciation, if any.

Yes new cars have all the gadgets and the new technology, but they lack character, and manufacturers are making cars harder and harder for the DIY people to maintain and look after there own car.

They function better yes. There was a thread a while back over someone wanting a 'fun' track car and was looking for an old Clio Cup. Some good points raised, a MK1 cup may be faster than an mx-5 around the track but you're going to have a lot more fun, and explore your driving ability far greater in the mx-5.

I don't do track days to compare penis sizes (who can lap faster), it's purely for the enjoyment factor.

Each to their own i guess, i'd much rather fly around the 'ring in an E30 M3 than a Focus ST.

I wouldn't go for a Cossie i'd go for a XR4x4 or XR4i with a turbo fitted they're loads more reliable, make stupid amounts of torque and can be had very cheaply. They both handle good on the limit aswell get em nicely sideways dead easy.

LOL at this thread.

They say fools buy old cars, crazy fools by old cars with turbos but clinically insane people buy old cars with turbos and talk of tuning them.

Personally ive never seen the appeal of escort or sierra cosworths. Most are complete dogs. They are one of those cars that was worth owning when it came out i guess. The best thing for them is to take the engines out and put them in decent looking shells.

Personally id rather own a minter than mint Fiesta zetec S than a knackered rusty sierra. The cosworth may be alot faster, but you could have 100 runs in the welsh mountains in the fiesta compared to the one time you take the cosworth to pod and it breaks on the first run then spends the next 5 month in the garage.

Delta integrale evo, Lotus Charlton, Sierra Cosworth,. Id be wanting to spend upwards of 20k on a decent one if i did buy one. Because other wise its going to cost you that much long term in repairs. Restoration and running costs would be astronomical. These are rich mens cars people.

Fore a cheap FAST turbo car id get a nissan 300zx for reliability alone. But even that will break.
