View Full Version : Who fancies trying their hands at a Sprint day?

Mark_Ritchspeed

Ever fancied something different from your normal track day? Well here it is. We are going to hire the test track at Haynes Motor Museum for the whole day and supply timing equipment so we can compete against each other.

We have provisionally booked Saturday August 27th.The day will be run as a sprint day, but will not be MSA authorised so no need for competition licenses, scrutineering and the cars dont have to be caged etc.

A MAXIMUM OF 20 CARS WILL BE ALLOWED AT £30 PER CAR.

It will be strictly first come first served.

The format for the day will be as follows:

1. The permitted Noise level on a Saturday is 101 db, so I think everyones car should be ok.
2.Helmets are compulsory.
Front seat passengers are permitted.
If needed, you will need to arrange your own insurance.

The Track is open from 10:00-13:00, then mandatory lunch break. Then pm session 14:00-17:00
Next to the track is the Haynes Motor Museum, with toilets and restaurant etc.

We were thinking of running the morning sessions as practise runs and the afternoon with timed runs.

Visitors/Spectators are very welcome and FREE. No young children please, unless extremely well supervised
No-one else is on the track during the day, it will be exclusively ours!

EVERYONE WITH NO EXCEPTION must sign the Haynes disclaimer BEFORE entering the track area.
I was thinking of seperating the cars into 2 classes or possibly 3 if needs be. Standard 2 litre, Standard 1.8 litre (If enough 16v's) and modified.

If you choose to run slicks you will automatically go into the modified section.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVED !! REMEMBER ONLY 20 CARS PERMITTED !!

I'm interested, but one question....Whats involved in a sprint day?

Is is striaght line racing, track style racing I've no idea as you can probbably tell.

Mark_Ritchspeed
28-04-2005, 09:52
Its a short circuit with only 1 car on track on time. The circuit length is just a bit over 1km so its quite tight and the top speeds wont be that high, but we were thinking of running 2 laps at a time as their are a couple of variations to the circuit.

Think of it more like a single stage tarmac rally, only with good quality tarmac so your cars wont get chewed up.

Mark_Ritchspeed
28-04-2005, 12:47
In some areas the run off is quite small, but to be fair nearly all the corners are really quite slow when compared to a big track like Oulton so the likelyhood of actually going off is very small.

If you drive within your abilites there really shouldnt be a problem.

I would estimate the top speeds to be somewhere between 70-80 mph. At the end of the day we will all get a good chance to get used to track in the morning sessions and gradually build up speed to a point your happy with.

Although we will be competing, its also just a bit of fun and different from a normal track-day. Think of it more as a cheap and fun introduction to motorsport, where the only people were competing against will be friends.

J o n
28-04-2005, 12:49

29-04-2005, 08:39
What classes as modified?

Any cars on slicks
Any cars with power mods *
Any cars that are stripped and/or caged
Any competition vehicles

* At the moment I'm unsure wether this should exclude very minor mods, like exhaust, filter etc. What does everyone think? Although if you have more than say 1 minor mods you go into the modifed class e.g if you have filter, exhaust de-cat and chipped etc which a few cars will have.

I was thinking any hybrids that are running completely standard engines will run in the standard 2 litre class?

Swervin_Mervin
29-04-2005, 09:47
Well I'll prolly have backbox, de-cat and filter but wouldn't class it as modified.

Mark_Ritchspeed
29-04-2005, 10:03

dannyt
29-04-2005, 12:11
I definately think there should be set rules, perhaps in bhp, if people know there's, anything with 5bhp above standard is modified?

or

1.8, 2.0 standard inc exhaust and de-cat,

1.8, 2.0 modified (everything else)

what do you think?

Danny

J o n
29-04-2005, 12:15
deffo put me in standard... only runniny zorst and decat... and cams...

summeh
29-04-2005, 12:17
to be honest i think the original idea was good...

1.8 standard (including exhaust and filter mods)

2.0 standard (including exhaust and filter mods)

anything else

If its a slow circuit i really don't think exhaust and filter mods are going to make much difference anyway.

Rudders16v
29-04-2005, 12:34
What about anything with suspension mods? Or even brakes? Both could make quite a differance over standard on a tight track

KingStromba

KS, what you have to remember is that simple breathing mods although effective do not produce massive gains, so I think they go in standard... afterall, a car with a cat back and filter will be closer to a standard car than one with cams or whatever...

I see where your coming from, but like Mark says, his is breathed on and he wont really stand a chance against the cam'd cars on this site... okay, he's a better driver, but lets forget that for the time being! lol

KingStromba
29-04-2005, 13:43
Mark is driving blindfolded to give is a chance.

Just as its not fair for a breathind modded car to go up against a cammed car, its also not fair for a standard car to go up against a breathing mod car.

Mines not run in so i will be pootling round anyway. And thats why i intend to have a section to myself so that i can still win.

KingStromba
29-04-2005, 13:47
And also anyone not on regulation 185 55 15's have to go in the modified section, as do anyone with non standard stereos. :D

Ill also be on the look out for cheats running refurbed wheels, cotton filters and non-Elf oil.

There will also have to be a megane section for 2live and The Jesus.

tbh i can see its going to cause a lot of disagreement whatever is decided upon.

J o n
29-04-2005, 14:00
dunno what you mean... my car's standard... no really... what cams?

from experience tho the difference between a standard and breathed on is fairly small... but breathed on to cam'd is pretty huge... see 2 lives and Martins cars for examples, I've raced both of those before they were maped and were only timed in... result? ABSOLUTELY SPANKED! lol

mine no Megane engine... it's a Williams one... well, it is now!

KingStromba
29-04-2005, 14:00
What about one category, but you get a time penalty per mod.

So work out a lap times, then say + 1 secs for a ss exhaust, + 1 sec for a decat. + 2 secs for cams.

Everyone declairs their mods and the times are added to your total.

Megane bottom end + 30 secs

J o n
29-04-2005, 14:08
erm, modded cars could end up being twice as slow as the non modded ones! lol

it's hard to gauge, each cars different... even with the same mods... i reckon we just... drive and work the rest out afterwards

Mark_Ritchspeed
29-04-2005, 14:42
Lol. Look at you lot. I leave you alone for a few hours and were going to end up with a seperate class for each car.

How about this:

Modified:
Anything stripped or competition/track prepped. Anything running on slicks. Anything with more than 1 performance mod. (Suspension/tyres/brakes are the biggest difference anyway). 1.8's and 2.0's included

Standard 2.0:
Either Willy or hybrid with a maximum of 1 performance mod.

Standard 1.8:
As above but with 1.8 engine.

Having said that, at the end of the day, unless 1 car is massively quicker than anything else it will be down to the grip it can gain from its tyres and the driver. As an example, mine wont be much quicker (if any) than a standard 2.0 in a straight line, (although stripped, its just as heavy with all the safety equipment) but it should have a bit of an advantage through the bends and on the brakes.

It is supposed to be a fun weekend anyway, just with a "slight" competition edge to it.

Swervin_Mervin
29-04-2005, 14:55
I reckon KS will be the only standard then! Fvck it I say, who cares? It's just a laugh. Leave the arguements for the day. I reckon us F1 equipped ones will whup the poxy PE2 equipped shite anyway so maybe we should get a 2s penalty!

summeh
29-04-2005, 14:58
how about the following 2 categories to once and for all settle the PE2 vs F1's debate? :D

2 cateogies...

- Those running F1's

Anyone not running the above two shouldn't be allowed on :D

So how many laps do you think we'll be looking at Mark? If we've got 6 hours track use, split between 20 cars is 18 mins a car. Then minus a few mins for getting cars on/off the track, we'll be looking at about 10-15 mins track time per car will we?

Mark_Ritchspeed

I suppose it depends if we get the full 20 cars. I am guessing total track time will be about what you said if there is the full quota of cars there. If its a few less then a bit longer.

The day should be a lot easier on the cars than a full on track day though as nothing will have a chance to overheat if we are only doing about 2kms at a time.

Possibles are in brackets. That makes the full 20 if everyone on the list confirms. Also, just to reconfim we will be supplying the timing gear, but if anyone has one of those in-car performance meters we can also do 1or2 0-60mph runs. If not I will have a look around and see if I can pick one up from somewhere.

Also if everyone can enter the class they will be running in and just alter this list to suit.
