I was under the impression that my early 1992 Clio didnt need a Cat fitted by law? Is this correct.

Also am I right in thinking I should be ok MOT time without a Cat fitted?

Cheers
Dan

cats were optional untill J reg as far as i know. After J you had to have them on for MOT time.

How early is it? I think the threshold was April 1992.

I think it was 16/04/1992.

Isnt there somewhere online to show when a car was first registered?

well my car is on an L plate (early ph2 1994) and mine doesnt have to have a cat on for the emissions test. all that the tester should do is put 'cat removed' on the advisories

i wasnt far off on my guess:

Date of First Registration 18 04 1992
Year of Manufacture 1992
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1764CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLUE

Well should be ok then! Just wondered if i was legal to drive on the road without one :)

again ffs

NO car NEEDS a cat

it has to comply with its age related emmisions output.

pre 31st august 1992 the emmisions onlyhave to 3.5% CO

post 31st augusdt they have to be under 0.5%

then you have euro 2002, 2004 and 2007 (iirc) compliance.

it doesn't matter if theres a cat there or not it has to meet the exhaust emmisions.

Theres no LEGAL requirement for any car to have a catalytic convertor fitted only that it must comple with its emmisions criteria.

very true.

and it goes on the age of engine, NOT the car.

so, if ur clio 16v wont pass emmisions test for a cat-test, tell the tester then engine is from a '91 19 16v, and they have to test for non-cat emmisions. your not lying, the F7P's WERE fitted to 19's of that age.

also in my experience if its registered properly as a hybrid (16v with 1998cc engine) then it wont come up on the compter system. so they can only do the basic emissions test.

thankfully mine is jan '92 registered so im fine either way!

they didnt say (ohh its a williams engine so must be post 1994, so it needs a cat!)

the differences are huge in emsissions tho. pre aug 1992 - 3.5% is quite big compared with post aug 1992 at 0.5%. Think mine came in at around 1.05% or something fully decatted etc etc.

On side note, on a busy main road in Bristol yesterday they had a seciotn of road narrowed down to one road.

On the side where vans with all sorts of equipment, like this vacuum thing on the side of the road and camera facing all the cars.

Signs saying "Emissions testing in progress", reckon they will do you if your over the limit? or is it a generic test to see what it is like in bristol as a whole?

A year ago or so the police had a remote MOT testing bay on the side of the road one evening around here. I belive they where testing emissions as well. They noticed my mate didnt have a cat and pulled him up for it, he did drive a kitted saxo vtr at the time so deserved it :)

road side emmisions test, laugh in their face and take it to court.

No council/police operative is a certified vehicular technician.

They just love it when you get arsy and make them look stupid.

Ones that I have commented on

probe lying in muddy puddle.

me: "is that standard practive to have the probe in a puddle?"

cold engine

them: "cars way over the limit"
me: "no shite sherlock, perhaps you can elaborate for me"
them: "Its meant to be under 1%Co"
me: "really? wow they must have changed the law just for you then eh?"
them: "don't get smart or we will sieze your illegal vehicle"
me: "what sort of certification do you have? Also perhaps you can tell me why a carbed car registered in march 1991 needs to quialfiy for an imaginary emmisions limit?"
them: "er, it just does"
me: "so you ARE certified and as such you are merely jesting with me and know that the car has been driven less than a mile, has the choke on and therefore would be classed as in 'cold start enrichment' in order to get to operating temp as quick as possible to ensure low emmisions output?"
copper: "**** off" (why do coppers always tell you to **** off or call you cunt?
council boy: prick.
me: "fannies" and drive off.

Im pretty sure they cant do emmisions tests on the spot anyway. If you had your mot done surely it cant fail and if it does your not to know about it till next mot time anyway.

An MOT is worthless for car condition, it merely states the given car meet the MINIMUM required saftey standards on that date.

I totally agree with this - mot's are plain rubbish..

I can drive around in a dangerous life threatening car to me and to others for 364 days, 23 hours and however long it taked to do a test - as long as it scrapes through in that hour or whatever its deemed fine
