View Full Version : PTFE Inlet Manifold Gasket

I saw on another car forum, a group buy for these, and it said that they gave a good increase in bhp by keeping the inlet manifold cooler due to the heat not radiating through to the inlet manifold.

Would this work on the clio? As i know it gets nice and hot inside the bay.

yes, we have some being made at the moment, but the problem is that you have to alter some of the fixings holes and slot them since you push the manifold further out.

FincH

How exactly does it work then?

mattyc
31-10-2006, 11:52
As above, how does it work? what are the gains and how much is it going to cost for parts and fitted?

Im guessing the PTFE is a very good insulator.

the normal inlet manifold gasket is metal which conducts the heat well and heats up the inlet manifold and therefore heats up the air before entering the engine.

As the PTFE doesnt conduct very well, the inlet manifold stays cooler, air stays cooler, cooler air enters the engine.

Thats how i imagine it to work anyway.

Yeah that was the blurb that i read about it.
Seems a cheapish mod to do for abit of gain.

BenR
31-10-2006, 17:57
quite correct, the ol honda boys have been doing it for ages and they see repeatedly large gains, but they do have alot more HP to begin with.

I've seen carb setups with 1" thick spacers that knock up torque and bhp a silly amount for just temp reduction.

But it depends since the rad sits right infront of it anyway.

Were just trying out a few, so they wont be expensive and we'll ship them out for people to fit, since labour costs for fitting a gasket will be high due to time taken, not very economical unless you are doing it yourself etc.

Cool i would be interested in one when you sell some.
Would be fitting mine myself anyway.

How thick do you reckon it has to be,1mm/2mm thick,we use sheet ptfe in work on the lasers, very good at deflecting heat,if it can stand a laser imsure an exhaust manifold is simple?

Maybe be able to make a few up aswell

BenR
31-10-2006, 20:11
exhaust manifold?

02-11-2006, 10:38
Im interested, but is it a radiator off jobbie to get the inlet manifold off?

summeh
03-11-2006, 14:19
yup, and the rest.

FincH
03-11-2006, 15:06
Mate it's a Valver....of cousre it's going to involve removing everything, lots of swearing and cut hands.

snowman
03-11-2006, 21:51
inlet fanimolds are a rate pain in the arris to get off,so many other bits to remove first like alternator bracket for a start

Lunner
05-11-2006, 16:00
Defo interested

Shoudl be able to get away with taking the top of the slam anal off and pulling the top of the rad forwards

summeh
05-11-2006, 18:52
should be easier for me, as I don't have any of the supporting brackets on my inlet manifold, just the retaining nuts to the head.

The inlet's water heated isn't it? surely just unplumbing them should give good gains 8) obviously cold starting would be affected but

doe's any1 really care :?:

Laine_16v
21-11-2006, 21:34
No water runs through the inlet manifold?

david932
21-11-2006, 21:37
ah! well thats that idea blown

i jus read in the haynes that it does ..my bad!

the normal inlet manifold gasket is metal which conducts the heat well and heats up the inlet manifold and therefore heats up the air before entering the engine.

its not, its jus normal gasket material, ive got one from Renault under my bed, its like a black paper/felt/card material

Laine_16v
14-12-2006, 23:35
My bad, but clerly PTFE is a superior heat insulating material comapred to the standard.

Made one up in work lastnight, got to wait until my inlet arrives to fit it,trial and error really, its about 2mm thick atm, dont know if thats going to be thick enough yet.

Snowman, if you CNC those then i'll buy a batch since the guy i had doing mine has become my mechanic so no longer does them lol.

2mm-3mm is fine

MAXIBOY
19-01-2007, 01:41

snowman
19-01-2007, 09:31
lol, well ive got a source of the sheet ptfe now,yes if you wanted to you could do your own.

I dont know how much i could flog them for really, how much is a standard Renault jobbie?

Can cut one for a meg aswell once ive got original outline.

dan 16v
19-01-2007, 09:49

That could make a few :P

One the dimensions are on the CNC machine is it just a matter of pressing a button?

The Payen effort I have here was £5.18

19-01-2007, 14:00
The ptfe thats on ebay isnt large enough, the gasket is roughly about 375mm long, ill try and get a program made up,i cut the one i did for myself with a scalpel tho, they only take about 30mins with a steady hand but if the demand is high ill get a prog made

MAXIBOY
19-01-2007, 16:29

summeh
19-01-2007, 20:09
Surely the thicker the better? Wouldn't it be better to go for something slightly thicker, or would you not see any temp transfer difference?

AmDaMan
19-01-2007, 20:36
yeah mate let us know what happens!

MAXIBOY
19-01-2007, 20:46
problem is go to thick and the bolt holes wont line up on all the supports etc

david932
20-01-2007, 14:13
ben r which type of ptfe is the best then?

i've looked at some site's and theres various grades including glass filled and carbon filled

BenR
20-01-2007, 20:34
PLain old is fine.

The fibre filled items tend to wear cutters out quite fast and make a horrid mess.

Imperial_16v
20-01-2007, 21:46
I'd take one as long as the price is right. 8)

Sounds like a good little mod to do for some extra ponies!

AmDaMan
20-01-2007, 21:54
if someone can get me one of these for next week, i'll paypal em a fair amount it's just that my engine should be going in next week so might as well do it while the thing is in bits! :D

david932
20-01-2007, 22:57
cheers ben, mite give the scalpel/stanley method a try. these sheets come in any thickness from 0.5mm to 20mm

ben, what do you think is a good size to go for? or what thickness do these honda boys use?

29-01-2007, 22:45

Not a problem... Use washers to space out as required (tip from Ben R himself).

Or you could do away with the supports. Save a tiny bit of weight and save yourself some hassle when doing the alternator/manifold in the future.

MatBrown
30-01-2007, 00:26

MAXIBOY
12-02-2007, 14:07
any one sorted these yet then

MAXIBOY
24-02-2007, 13:02
right. made myself one of these today. when fitting would you just use the PTFE gasket and sealant or sandwich it between two standard gaskets.

david932
26-02-2007, 00:55
i was speaking to a chap at the weekend who's recently fitted one to a 205, he said he just used the ptfe as it seemed soft enough. he also said it worked well with a noticeable increase in torque :D

MAXIBOY
26-02-2007, 01:02
cheers mate. yes bought a bit of 3mm and hand cut it one night. seams like it will be worth the effort then.

david932
26-02-2007, 01:16
where did you source your ptfe from? cheapest i've found is £25 for a 40mmx40mm sheet @2mm thick

MAXIBOY
26-02-2007, 01:36
bought a 400mm x 100mm piece from davies industrial plastics. price was 9.00 quid postage was 10.50 but came the next day. not sure if the postage is a flat rate across the board. tel no 01239 552836.

Would also be interested if someone can do a batch cnc run :) mk1 1.8 16v of course

david932
23-03-2007, 00:13

yes but easy to make one yourself.

Imperial_16v
12-04-2007, 22:39

Well I thought the whole point of this was to get someone to make a batch and get a good 'ol group buy on the go. Someone could make this a nice little earner. :) ;)
