Clio finally up and running with new gearbox and now "proper" struts. No thanks to Euroshitparts.

Initial road test is very good. Acceleration seems much improved, although slightly hard to gauge as I have been poncing about in some very quick motors recently.
Max in gear speeds before hitting limiter:

1st gear @ 30mph (Lol, what a waste of space)
2nd gear 55mph (down from 60+)
3rd gear 80mph (down from @95)
4th gear 100mph (down from @115ish)
5th gear , I'm guessing about 120ish as I havent really used it yet.

Just need to get it over for MOT and retax and away we go. I'm guessing that discounting 1st gear its going to be much better for rallies and track-days now.

I want a Kangoo box with the 5th ratio from a 1.9 diesel

But why? The diesel box has higher ratios. The lowest ratio box Renault do is the Kangoo box with 4.22:1 fd. All the other ratios are close together as well. From memory the diesel is something like 3.6:1 or 3.7:1.

As soon as its Mot'ed I'm off into the mountains to test it on some proper roads.

I want accleration and then a fifth to dump it in for on the m-way and cruise quietly and more efficiently.

Is a kangoo box strong enough?

Is the box brand new? How much was it?

We'll find out if the box is strong enough, but I cant see why not. Although the Willy box has stronger gears and synchros the weakness on all these boxes is the final drive and to be fair mine would probably have still been ok without the wrong struts on. As far as I know the Willy fd is no stronger than any of the other boxes.

The box came out of a low mileage (14k IIRC) 1.4 2001 Kangoo petrol van and cost @£200. Cant rememver exactly.

Hopefully the beefed up engine/box mounts will also help matters.

Isnt the weak part of the willy box the bearings? they beefed the whole box up,casing and gears, then realised they didnt have enough room to fit better bearings, weaker then the valver bearings.... from what Nick Hill was telling me.

Quite possibly. Hopefully this one will last ok.

in gear speeds seem almost exactly same as the willy box....but if it gets there quicker..hehe bonus

Sounds interesting this, does the kangoo box fit straight on?

Yep, it bolts straight on. You need to keep the bottom linkage of the Willy box (different length) and get a new aluminium top mount and space it out slightly to keep the engine level.

I also fitted the 19 16v bottom gearbox mount and filled all bushes with polyurethane sealant to stop any engine slap.

The rubber mount on top of the gearbox goes in exactly the same place and the only other real differences are, it uses 1 less bolt to bolt the box to the engine and because I fitted the 19 mount on the bottom I have had to shift the hardpipe for the power steering a little.
