View Full Version : Is 5w-40w Full Synth too thin?

After asking a few people if 5w-40w is any better for winter driving than 10w-40w I seem to have become even more confused.

A handful of people say it's too thin and will burn off too quickly, yet another handful say it's perfect and swear by it and recommend it.

I have a bottle of 5w-40w Comma Fully Synth ready for my next oil change and I'm changing from 10w-40w Semi Synth and I also hear this could pose problems as Semi and Full synth don't like to mix :?:

What option to go for? Obviously I want what's best for my engine, which is a 75k(ish) F7P...not too heavy on oil, burns a bit, but about average for an F7.

Help!

5/40 is great for winter and will burn off no quicker that 10/40 really, its just thinner on startup so doesnt take as long to get round the tappets ect in the winter

should be fine.

perfect for winter, and dosent tend to burn off too much unless thrashing it all the time/ tracking it.

i need to service both the clio and polo :

Oil, oil filter, gearbox oil, plugs, fuel filter.

just one thing after another really!

I use mobil 1 which is 0/40, but I also add slick 50's as a treatment.

It creates a coating apparently so doesnt cause as much wear on the engine parts for start up in the morning.

I'm not too up on this sort of thing and go with what my car seems to like and is recommended to me.

On using the Mobil 1 alone, I used to get a bit of a tappety noise for the first few seconds in the morning. But I was reluctant to stop using the mobil 1 as my car seemed to really like it, it didnt burn off as quick as others I'd tried and the temp stayed low. I was advised to put in some slick 50's with the mobil 1 on my next oil change. Sorted it a treat.

i use 5W-40, its the best grade really as long as your engine is in decent condition

the only time you would burn more is if you thrash it from cold, as once up to normal temperature its exactly the same thickness as a 10W-40, or a 15W-40 for that matter, because they are all 40 oils

Nah man I never ever rag it from cold. Rarely 'rag' it when warm either tbh :)

10/40 shell helix semi is great stuff. Tried Mobil 1 and it was horrible in my experience. I'd only use a 5/40 fully synth for track days when the engine is getting a thrashing

I'm using the Elf Excellium 5w40 from Renault - about £23 for 5 litres.

Warms up nice and quickly and noisy tappets die down really quickly! :)

i used shell helix 10w40 at cadwell and temps were spot on. tbh one of the best oils ive used for the price.

mite try something else next time.

so far ive used :

comma lite semi synth 10w40 - was ok. decent price
halfords fully synth 5w50 motorsport - was ok, but very tappety. kinda expensive
shell helix semi synth 10w40 - good. ok price. runs very well.
