As I'm gonna be taking my willy wheels off for the winter I've been thinking about re-furbing the set of turbines that I have just to smarten them up a bit. I wanna do them white ideally...if I only want to give them a tidy up....whats the process...
1. Clean wheels
2. Sand
3. Fill Chips
4. Sand/clean up
5. Primer
6. White top coat.

I was thinking of using some Hammerite...is this ok...
Matt :D

I used hammerite for my wheels, does the job nicely :) - Lacquered too though

Mine were flaking when i got them and werent holding air

I first stripped them down with nitromors (took about 5 cans!)

then sanded a bit

then sprayed em up

Would I do it again? hell no! :p it took me weeks, cause of all the 'turbine' holes; 16 on each wheel = 64 in total, doing 1 side of them at a time = 256 side bits. its gets frustratining really quickly :p

Luckily this was over the summer just gone, inbetween exams, so i worked on my tan whilst doing em :p

ive got some pics; ill get them up in a mo

clean

spray can - white

5mins later - job done

if its only for the winter then it dont matter.

and the insides dont matter on turbs, as no-one ever sees them!

No that sounds more like it....as you said...it's only for winter use. Cheers lads.

if you hammerite em, dont do a track day with em

did you see mine @ FCS06 when i came off track, they had melted hehehehe, so im gonna powdercoat em now and see if that holds out!!

I changed the colour to be slightly lighter (hammered silver), not sure if i like the result or not, original looks nice :D

Its a shame they're coming off on saturday ;)

But i suppose if you have a good set of wheels in the first place, or arn't as bothered as they are secondary then you don't have to go to as much of an effort :p

They look good m8....so did you just use some of the nitromors on them, clean them up, sand them down and spray?...and how long did they take? Matt

i used nitromors and wire wool on them to completely strip them

I had to do this as the lacquer was peeling off in big chunks and the tyres wouldnt hold a seal. And because the lacquer is quite thick, you cant really sand it down. You could just peel chunks of turbine shaped lacquer off with your hand! must've been original

I used about 5 cans (make sure you tell b&q you are over 21 )

Then i sanded and sprayed them.

I didnt have to use any filler on them, as they were completely uncurbed!

The stripping was the hard part (oo er) simply because getting at all the fiddly places was hard (and theres *lots* on turbines)

or grt them blasted at a tenner a wheel and then paint them or powder coated for fifty quid a set
