View Full Version : Sorting rusty arches

my valver has the usual rusty arches and i want to get em sorted...

Got a local welder who said he would get rid of the rust and tack a bit of metal over the arch to bring its shape back. He only wanted about £60 a side (unpainted) but can you do this? the arches arnt flared, so surely sticking a plate over them would stick out like a sore thumb? :/

Another place down in Exeter have quoted me £840 to do them, £700 of which being labour. They detailed having to take seats and bumpers off etc to do the work, so maybe if i do those it will be a bit cheaper.

So, how much have other people been quoted/charged (and where from) to do arches and what were the results? I don't mind spending up to about £400, does this seem reasonable?

i was quoted £350, for welding, labour and paint e.t.c by a very good bodyshop close to me.

£840 is excessive, search else where. This bloke that does it for £60 sounds a little dodgy, get it done at a proper bodyshop or the rust will rear its ugly head again in no time.

i was quoted about £300 to cut and weld one arch, and sort another patch of rust on teh same side wherte the door closes, again by a very good local bodyshop

Matty you are local to me there is a place in Crediton that done a good job for 106diablogti on here on his williams, thread appears to be gone now after forum crash. Overall price for this job was £350 £250 for the worst side £100 for the other.

£840 - Is he gonna paint the rest of the car for that as well????

I had my arches sorted when I had a full paint job. The rust was cut back and replacement panels put in similar to above.

I paid 1100 for all the work done, which included digging out dodgy filler out off the door locks and boot lid and sealing/replacing. The person who had it before me had de locked and removed the rear wiper but done a poor job by not sealing it properly and water had got in. I was quoted £900 for my full respray without this work done.

I'd be looking at no more that 250.

Lewsi theres a guy on ebay selling to carefully (alledgedly) removed whole rear wings or an body panel supplier should be able to sell you standard 2 door clio arch repair panels which i believe could be sligghtly adjusted to suit williams or 16v

TBH its not that difficult to put the repair sections in yourself, they should be availabel from you local re-make panel distributor (will check at my supplier). Different car, but same idea but this is what i did today, obviously needs the final prep work to the outside but very similar.

I tried to ignore it

I couldnt help it but i took it off again to see if it had magically gone away........obviously not

Trust grinder out

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/POWARTEK/Austin/underwindowcutout.jpg

marked off from my new panel

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/POWARTEK/Austin/newrearqtrpanel.jpg

A little fettle and a few tacks and we are there

stich welded from behind then removed outside tacks and cleaned up, will need to be filled and blended yet but that will come when all the panels that need repairing are ready.

thats great if you can do it yourself

but I dont know how to weld, cba to learn and i don't have any of the facilities :)

I'd much rather give it to someone knows what they're doing (not saying that you don't - I don't :P)

Oh, and Katbloke, how long did it take for them to do the job? hours/days/weeks? :o

yes northy, your right, was a waste but i didnt want to disturb the original seams, as ur aware they are on the outside and look horrible once removed and refitted.

plastic coated metal strips ?

most of em were all metal.....either painted the same colour as car, or chromed. some were that plastic chrome shit u get too. only plastic/rubber coated ones iv seen were stuff like door seals without the rubber bits on.

MAXIBOY
09-10-2006, 12:13
later ones were plastic coated. early ones were body colour painted metal. both are crap. better to deseam the whole car and be rid of the rust forming water trapping moss growing seams altogether as 2 live said. better looking and more aero dynamic.

2 live
09-10-2006, 12:17
id leave the gutterin on....above the doors at least......waters prone to running off the roof and straight down the inside of the doors if its removed altogether...

You need to ask for standard ones, Renault are the only place that do the 16v ones.
