View Full Version : When a Williams tyre goes pop

Ok guys, before telling the tale I must for legal purposes state the driver of the vehicle was NOT ME and the bit of road was private land.

Along time ago and in a land called Devonshire a handsome prince was on his way to work. Upon his Renault based steed the Williams driver encountered a problem. Shortly after passing 2 lane-hogging lorries the frustrated Williams pilot booted the throttle close to their exit, reaching close to a ton. It was then they encountered the trauma. The rear left tyre went bang and caused the car to buck, swerve and slide in a manoeuvre very similar to when Mansell’s Williams Honda’s tyre blew in the 80s. Fortunately the car was controlled and stopped before the set of lights at the end of the slip-road.

Here are the pictures of the destroyed tyre:

As somebody inside the car, I was lucky that the rim was OK, bodywork unharmed and possibly most importantly I didn’t die.

I’ve since driven the route and the tyre mark on the road goes from 1 barrier to the other, again adding to my luck.

I have now got a replacement set of Toyo Proxies, which are pretty grippy.

Anyone had any similar leary moments?

For actual pics of the car see the Newbies section.

Glad no one was hurt. Was the tyre scrubbing the arches for quite some time before the accident? And is the tyre quite old manufacture?

I’ve no idea what the brand of tyre that obliterated itself was and will never know now as it’s in the tyre heap in the sky (fortunately not with me).
The cause of death from what I saw when doing a post mortem was a pin, which must have steadily worked itself through until it penetrated the carcass at 95.
The irony was that I had some new rubber ordered for the Monday after the weekend as I new the rears had seen better days.

The Toyos are simply the replacement set of boots and DID NOT explode!
From my brief experience using Proxies I have been relatively impressed in the dry having not found the limit yet, however they do seem to spin easily in the wet. This is to be expected though as the tyre chappie told me it takes them about 200 miles to ware in and scrub off the synthetic outer coat.

I'll give you one guess what the tyre was that blew.... :!:

At the end of the day I paid 120 quid delivered for the Proxies...they were ok in wet but nothing special...after the blow-out I don't think i'll be going back to them though.

Glad you were ok mate and the rim!

I had something like this happen.

On my last clio somebody must have tried to steel my wheels one night got to the lock nut and realised that they couldnt have em.

Next day went into town noticed a strange noise (front passenger side) throught it was a wheel bearing when bam the wheel that was being held on by one lock nut had snapped next thing I know the alloy was crushed under the break hub and the side of the car slammed on the road!

Another alloy later and another set of lock nuts (2 per wheel this time) all back to normal, could have written off my car if I was going any faster.

that tyre was underinflated.

I use proxes on all the cars as its the best tyre for the money by miles and I prefer them to more expensive tyres which i have bad expereinces with.

 That could of hurt .

 Ihad a blow out a year ago while  somebody else was enjoying driving through North Wales at 60+ enjoying the lovely flowing roads when the driver encountered a 90degree left up hill down into a 90degree right where some farmer left a brick sticking out of the wall which burst the wall of my tyre sending the car towards the nearest wall. Luckily the quick drver managed to hall the car to a quick stop and not give any sheep any nasty surprises. Tyre f*cked slight scrape on alloy ever slightly brown pants apart from that Everybody was o.k.

Glad you got away with it. Had a blow out at 90 in my passat estate a few months back, glad I want' hammering it round the M25/M1 cross over when it went though.

I have toyo's on my clio for a road tyre I can't fault them, my 205 uses yoko 539's for track, although uselss in the wet, moving to kuhmo VR70A's now
