The forum is now back up and running.

It has been restored from a backup we had dated 27th June 2006.

So unfortunately any posts since then are gone for good. :(

It has been a right nightmare trying to restore it to the 27th June backup!

I don't quite know what happend myself, but it seems the site went down on the 20th September due to a server move, then came back up and the forum was missing posts between March 19th 2006 and present.

About time williamsclio was online again.

Thanks Summeh for helping restore the database from march to June 06 buddy. Your a star.

Guys - last monday we were moved to a UK server. Totally unknown to me. I recieved a pm saying that we had a UK providor and thats the last i heard of it. Tryed to log in on wednesday evening and the forum was gone !

It appears that the forum copied across fine but the database where all the posts are kept was lost. No backups were made before the move either.

Im very uspet by this as ive lost all the records, paid user groups, smileys and members. I have records stored locally of who has paid what so leave it with me and i will get it set up again soon.

Lol at me only having 3 cars on my avatar

Thanks for bearing with us !

P.S if anyone knows of there posts, video clips, pictures or knowledge base information thats now missing and u have a copy - can you repost the information please.

Just as another note, if you have tried to log on and you cant then you will most likely need to create your user account again if it was created after the restore date and you will then need to notify Northy or another member of WC admin if you had a paid membership status (along with when you became a paid up member).

post count has gone back to that date aswell? i think

northy
27-09-2006, 10:35
thanks for that jon.

If you cannot acsess the site can you reregister and send me a pm to let me know that your back on with your ORIGINAL USER NAME.

I have a record of all PAID members its the forum users i dont.

Post counts are just a small section of whats missing.

To give u some sort of idea - The only thing that was kept was the default williamsclio BLUE background and the avatars ](*,)

i'd take the hosts to court.

i was forced to actually do some work whilst it was down.

FTJ, I have sent them an email with the clubs thoughts and issues on this, and without going into painstaking laborious detail I've basically informed them on their breach of contract in failing to provide the agreed service. Hopefully they wont just fob us off, otherwise legal advice will be the next step just to see where we stand. I think we are in a good position though, as from a logical standpoint it's unreasonable for them to be able to do this and not compensate us, otherwise they could arguably just take the clubs money and not actually host or do anything if they can do this.

Will wait and see though, I'm optimistic that they will start coming round to our way of thinking as I'm not going to be fobbed off with techy BS excuses and have insinuations that we could have helped prevent this. End of the day we are paying them to look after this so we dont have to.

nyk
27-09-2006, 11:43
who is it that is used to host the site?

summeh
27-09-2006, 12:24
To be honest, they will probably just say "Customers responsibility to keep backups".

Depends on what they advertise on their website, and the wording in their T&C's as to whether or not they are actually responsible for maintaining a backup, frequency of backups, and retention of backups.

HOWEVER, it is NOT the backup that is the issue of contention here:

As far as i'm aware (correct me if wrong northy), the site was moved to a new server. The host has failed to restore the account correctly. Probably because they are just a "reseller" and don't actually have direct access to the server.

When a host wants to move sites to different servers, it's quite easy, package up accounts, import on new server. For some reason everything went through, except for the LARGE phpbb database.

I expect the database failed to import, for excactly the same reason it failed when I tried to restore it... Timeout due to the size (over 100mb), which is to big for cpanel/phpmyadmin import.

If the host has the account package file they used to move to the new server, or the site still on the old server, I can restore the database from that, using ssh.

So perhaps contact the host and ask them...

It is a customers responsibility generally to back up their own info but the host should still have had a more recent restore point than 3 months ago.

It originally restored back to March last night so God only knows.

Seems to me someone didnt know what they were doing as the users database was corrupted from the error message diplayed, by importing/exporting to new server.

All said and done what has happened is really bad service and the down time was even worse. maybe we should all pay a but more membership to get a better host/ managed backup facility???

summeh
27-09-2006, 12:54
That depends on what they advertise, and their T&C's. It is just bad practice to not have anything more recent.

Deffo a better host ;)

If I hear northy correctly, the hosting company also did not give advance notice of the DNS switch-over. The switchover itself should cause a typical service outage of 48 hours. This failing alone would have been enough for comercial businesses to seek damages. But, unfortunately, this being a non-commercial site; an explanation of events and some hosting freebies is the most I would expect (if any at all).

J o n
27-09-2006, 13:04
as Summeh says, it not the backups that are the issue, it's the fact everything was moved based on an email conversation he had with Northy a while ago and was not planned in the event that failure may occur. It's very very basic stuff, when you move a server you make a backup, it only has to be temporary... but this is obviously too much to ask.

northy
27-09-2006, 13:42
summeh i have asked for any files he has.

I always kept a backup of the forum as i have done for the last year and a half. but not knowing the full insides out i wasnt informed that there was a database file aswell. Safe in the knowledge my backup forum worked i loggon on to that wednesday to find my backup had suffered the same problem as this forum.

Apparently they share the same DB's  I would expect a backup to of been made before any move started as a matter of course !

summeh
27-09-2006, 14:32

Glad it's back online but surely a mysql dump of the database would have been or is all that is required to restore it properly.

Then if php is timing out on the upload just get the host to change the POST_MAX_SIZE or UPLOAD_MAX_FILESIZE settings in php.ini

Failing that just get them to recreate it locally.

the database was transfered but never fully checked, it was deleted when the rest of the homepage worked.

There was no backup left to revert to.
