Paying someone to do the gasket your looking at about £400-£600.
Fan not working could be a number of things, need to check the wiring and see what sets it off.
Mat.
you really need to start having a go with the spanners yourself mate! you'd save a packet! your engine not right after the roll pal?
Sometimes mayo and condinsation can form if you havent run the engine for a while.
Run it and it may go. If it overheats then you're fooked
I'd do it for £250 inc skim and bolts/gasket if u fancy a trip to lovely waaaaales!

Think he's out of AA tows!
He'll have to join the RAC instead.
Mat.
LOL i've got 2 left in a joint onew with my sister, she hasn't used any lol
lol gotta love the RAC/AA!
tis cheap, but its as much as a hobby/passion for me working with engines as it is a livliehood. consequently i dont feel the need to over-charge...im fair that way. i genuinly like to and try to help people....
(^^^by no means a sales pitch...anyone that has dealt with me will tell u the same)
Fan not kicking in will have almost certainly caused the engine to overheat and cook the headgasket.
So make sure you get that sorted before you go for a blast with a new hg.
If you did it yourself your looking at:
Timing belt (12quid gsf)
Head bolt set (25quid gsf)
Headgasket (21quid gsf)
Thats the minimum parts u need, unless your name is 2live and then you re-use the bolts and just "do um up a bit tighter" LOL.
Stan's offer of 250 is very good.
lol......depends how long the bolts are in for.....on mine ..yeah i reused the old bolts.....was only sposed to have the head on a couple weeks........but when im puttin a head on to stay on.....i use new uns.
the fan not cutting is normally down to the wiring corroding and snapping off....well im my case it was after a garage changed the oil filter.
Speak to Ste mate he'll be able to sort u out.
Fan was cutting in fine last week when I was there, all your needles seem to have a mind of there own.
Hope your not going to miss Oulton... :(
Bad news that martin, is the car back on the road now then mate?

Yep I'd take it to him too, he knows his stuff
Martin.. just disconnet the water temp gauge and don't worry about it.. being naive about the problem is the way forward! ( ;) JUST KIDDING!!)
My water gauge has only worked twice since I've owned the car.. so I think it's a wiring prob for me as well, and I have never heard the fan come on either  If your gonna be thrashing the car around a track I really think you need to get them both sorted :)
£250 is good from anyone for a 'decent' head gasket change. Regular garages will charge a lot more for a half baked job. Remember to cost in new oil/filter and water coolant cost (if stan doesn't include these).
Matthew
I think he's sorted it now- june 2006! He's on a new car with different engine now.
