Hi....My clio williams 1 is suffering with low oil pressure....I think....

Runs at about 2.5 bar on startup but when warm drops to 1.5 bar ish and on tickover when hot almost zero bar ???

What is the problem?? Could it be the oil pressure sender ?? I've changed the oil for 5w 40 synthetic last weekend and only a very slight improvement...could it be the gauge, or could it be the motor???

Apart from this shes running great with no knocks or any nasty noises....

Excuse my ignorance...Im a complete mechanical numpty

:D What is it running at say 80 mph when everything has warmed up ? mines about 3-3.5bar - when v.hot on tickover about 1.2 ish - dont think yours is a problem but im sure the more enlightened will let you know!maybe the fully synthetic is abit thin - how many miles has it done?Dont worry

if its a SAE 40 oil, then it will be fine, no matter the "w" rating or whether its fully synth or semi synth.

the "w" rating is the cold start thickness, and when the oil reaches its operating temp it is another thickness.

so a 5w 40 oil is the same thickness (viscosity) when warm as a 15w40 oil. some people say 0w40 or 5w40 is too thin for these engines, but how can it be if when warm the oil is the same viscosity as 15w40 etc etc?

search for some of the oil threads on here if your unsure.

generally the williams engine (f7r) should be around 5 or 6 bar when cold driving, with about 2-3bar at cold idle. when up to temp (between 80 and 100 degs) at 80mph it will be around 3.5 bar, and just below 1bar on idle. each engine is different.

mines same as above but iv not seen mine go below 1 bar
and drive very low revs until it drops to 3bar ish

btw i use 15 40 oil

mine dips below 1 bar when hot on idle!

dont bother me too much as when im "driving" it the pressures are fine!

aii thats how mine runs (exactly).

although now mine will run when driving cold at 5/6 bar (6bar roughly above 2k) but will idle at 4, when i first got it, at idle it would be at 6 too. maybe a sign of age coming through.

sorry to highjack topic but with ppl talkin about presures it seems like a good sign to how good of a condition your engine is in ?
if im happy about how it runs / pulls and presure is fine
runs cool temp and sweet as at long high speed motorway (tests) but its done 110k and it has a tap id still think its in nice strong condition
so is there any need to probe if it aint broke ? any presure is good presure if its showing temp
i have only drove my own maybe i should arange a swap with some local guys

if it aint broke dont fix it.

im applying the same philosophy (sp) to my engines bottom end - if its running fine, and doing quick times then no need to rebuild it just yet! It is on 95k (apparently), but still going very strong!

When the oil temperature is about 90c to 100c, the oil pressure should be around 2.5bar to 3.5bar at 3000rpm. At idle, it can be almost 0bar up to about 1bar.

if my wily 3 was showing 0 bar on accelertion! i would be wooried"!

Ive just changed to silkolene 5w-40 and the pressure is excellent on my Williams 2 with 67k, Can reach 6 whilst puitting my foot down, idle's quite high too and car runs smooth and cool.

mine shows fook all anyway, im pretty sure its the sender (?) in the back of the engine because if i pull the plug off and earth it, the needle lifts all the way to max and sits there, so its not the wire or the gauge. :)

Thanks for the words of wisdom guys.....

When hot 100c and running at 80mph pressure gauge showing 1.5 - 1.8 bar...at tickover when 100c almost zero bar......

I'll try changing the sender first and see what happens......

Where is it and what is it like to change?? and how much are they??

It took me hours to get the oil filter off last weekend and Ive still got the scars to prove it....what a b'stard job.

No problem lad.

I that dont sound right at all. Do the sender and report back!

No idea! If you have a haynes manual for a mrk1 clio then it will be the same as the 16v one!

Haha - the joys! Mine is needing done again (i tend to change every 3k miles) but i always try to by the fram ones as they have the nut on the end which helps if its stuck on hard! Also oil filters only need to be hand tight as long as the seal is good!

Im using 5w 40 atm fully synth, mine runs at about 5 too 6 when i first start, then when its warm at temp of 100deg and doing about 70 to 80mph its 3 and just idle when warm its on( sitting at lights or somthing) 0 just drops to nothing

Oh and with 10w 40 semi syth its the same but at a hot idle it sits about 1 bar on the oil presure, using the fully synth as the engine seems to run better, runs a lot quieter then it used to with elf / shell / various semi synth

That does seem a bit low. Think mine is about 3-3.5bar at that point.
