I would've thought for a competetive hillclimb you'll need an SFI spec cage, seat and harness. You'll also need a on board fire extinguisher, battery cut off switch etc. All in the MSA blue book.

Hi Hooligan,
Would be pleased to help but there are few general rules ~~~ not mine the MSA ( formerely RAC) ~~ as a an MSA licence holder,as a competitor and a Licensed Clerk of Course.I would not be able to officiate etc at ANY event not run under the MSA rules ~~ This means Baitings Dam is out, because the Track Licence has been revoked some years ago.It would need an awful lot ogf money/time to get it up to the latest safety spec.
We (our Club) are running a legal Hillclimb at Scammonden Dam on August 20th,entry fee about £65,~~ but competitors need a licence not sure what the fee is but if you go on this website, you can download a form etc www.msauk.org You then need an MSA approved helmet, most generally comply ~~ just needs a sticker affixing by an MSA scrutineer,a set of fireproof overalls, timing strut on the car and away you go.A good day out,we try to give 3 practice runs and upto 5 timed runs to count for trophies. There are capacity classes all the way through,if there were enough of here,we could give a trophy for best Clio ~~ie standard car/modified whatever you want.we have had all sorts of standard cars, from minis upto a Ferrari 308 GTB !!! If you look on our website all the details will appear there www.pendledistrictmc.co.uk please feel free to contact me direct or pm me.
Apologies to all,for the longwinded reply,if the moderators feel the need, put this on another thread.

Winston, the engine and gearbox mounts are what the "Works" Renault Clio used aka Alain Oreille and Robbie Head, when they competed in The British Rally Championship. If you look in the Renault sport book ~~ they were about £1400 for the three, they pick up at the front of the subframe, either side and the gearbox mount is an ally casting about 120mm wide, sits in a special bracket. You then need the special Renault power steering pump & cam cover to suit, which drives from the end of one of the cams,OR use a non ~ powered rack OR do as I have done, got a small electric pump, fit it in the footwell and voila power steering and a very sturdy mounting.

Matt ~~ not wishing to get to involved with what is /is not allowed.Roll Cages on Sprints / Hillclimbs is defined in the MSA yearbook section L,paragraph 10.1 Road Going Production & Road Going Specialist Q1.5.1 or Q1.5.2 ( cage design) RECOMMENDED not mandatory, seats may be changes in the interests of safety as the belts. No requirement for extinguishers or electrical cut ~ out .
What is required ~~ earth lead identified (yellow ) ,direction of ignition switch on/off.If you come with a "full ~ house" track car, then yes cages etc are required.Std valver/Williams etc 306 gti/Golfs etc all in the same class std production cars 1600 ~ 2000.Obviously it depends on how serious you are ~~ I am not advocating, not to fit cages etc ~~~ safety is always paramount. But you will be surprised, how many guys regularly compete in there run about cars, drive 'em there do the event and drive 'em home.Scammonden Dam is only 430 yrds long !!!!.More likely to have an accident on the M65
If anyone is serious about having a "do",please feel free to contact me,I will help out all I can
Rod.

Lovely Clio! Very well put together. I know how much time goes into something like that.

Bang on mate. The exact spec as per the 'blue book' is that is must be "matt black and be (at least) 254mm x 51mm. When mounted on the car the bottom should be no more than 200mm from the ground and the top not less that 454mm from the ground."

I made my ones by chopping up the side of a washine machine and then just spraying black. When finished you whack them on the front of the car somewhere like this:

Steve, many thanks for your kind words   .As you are obviously someone who has put competition cars together you know, how long it takes.
Never mind the time and effort   .What about the cost ????  .My lovely wife once asked me,how much is the Rally Car worth ???   Ahem !!!!!  .do you mean how much I have in it,or how much I will get for it ~~~ I reckon with all the bits n pieces about £16/17k to sell about £8/9k !!!!! Only time I have heard her utter a four letter expletive or two :P :P.I am very lucky in having friends who are excellent engineers ~~~ well most of 'em work in the toolroom at Rolls ~ Royce   .Currently I am having some rose jointed bottom arms made, makes caster/camber adjustment a piece of ****.Ask Flan,he spent an all to brief time, having a look round

Flan - top bloke. Made me a lovely GRP bonnet which I picked up the other week. That's one of the easy parts though as the rest is taking an age! And at every step you find something else to do... Engine out, so why not remove the whole subframe and repaint it, etc. etc.

My Clio was the wife's daily drive until we had child #2 and she wanted something bigger (well, with more doors). I thought rather than get rid of the Clio I'd turn it into something for track days and sprints... A month or two has gone by and I don't even want to tot up the cost of those 'little bits' (poly windows, GRP bonnet, F7R+spare) but they already come to much more than the car was probably still worth! There are two things driving me on though:

1. Once finished, if the worst happens, apart from totally wrecking it, it shouldn't cost too much to fix (I'm hoping!). You can get a whole engine, etc. for not too much for these cars which is quite different to some of the other things I have run which come with mega bills all the time.
2. It's your own work. Whether you designed it and asked someone to build it or did every bit all yourself there is a sense of satisfaction in that?

And you should be very satisfied with what you have got there. It will make my (yet to be) finished article look very half-baked!

...And of course knowing how it is all put together will no doubt come in very useful on the rally stages when (not if!) there is some mechanical issue which you will know how to overcome.

BTW, I'd love a Stack gauge - makes little sense for my Clio really but I keep telling myself I can always transfer it to another car later! So, do they hook up to the Clio easily and give the readings for all the sensors?

you may need a nationalb licence,.... i'll dig details on how to obtain it !

I think thats the best thing about using old hatchbacks to race, if you bin it even if its a write off you can get a new shell for peanuts and swap all the bits over.

Didn't realise you didn't need a cage to compete. I think i'm gonna put a 4 point one (like the old works Mk2 Cortinas in the 60s) but no way would it pass an inspection if it was a requirement.

Might have to have a go at this hill climbing lark when my cars back on the road looks like a right laugh.

Sorry, not sure if I'm confusing things as the original post was cliorod's rally car, which need to be log booked, caged, etc. and a different licence.

If you just want to 'compete' in your Clio then you can enter hillclimbs or sprints. The latter is generally on airfields/race circuits so there is little you can hit! That said you don't need a cage for either, and a licence (you need "Speed National B (Non-Race)") that requires no test and is £33, downloadable from www.msauk.org.

Yeah that would be cool!!

Ive heard of a few people on the waves with a Gemini call sign.

I deal with RalliTrak however! Ive not been to a tarmac rally so far, its all forest stuff that I tend to do. Going to the big one, the RAC at the end of the year though!

Its getting to the point where I wanna participate too but its very expensive!! Im trying to find a motor club that look for navigators, never done it before but I wanna give it a try!!

Mikey.
If you look on "our" ( Motor club ) website, you will see all that we organise. The road rally is a great way of learning your trade ~~~ aka Navigating,I have been in both seats 8) 8) ,but much prefer co~driving, navigating. My first event was the "South Valley Trophy " in 1975,so I have been around the block a bit    .In those days ~~ it was not uncommon to see 2.0 ltr Ford BDG engined Escorts on 12"/10" wide Michelin TB rubber   .plus a lot of ex~works cars ~~~ TR7's.Vauxhall Chevette HSR.Lotus Sunbeams    .But the rules got changed and now it is basically standard cars ~~~ still good fun,as Saturdays episode proved.Anyway, please get in touch,I am about 1hr away from you,I can help you on the navigation etc etc, plus any other topic of Motorsport.I have been sent a picture of me in a dusty quarry on Saturday ~~~ but aint got a clue how to load it on here   .I guess I am just a numbskull ~~ so I have asked my mate   Bayliss to post it.

Rod, What fig are the grid refs for navigating? I used 10 fig in the military, and wouldnt mind certainly giving NAVING a go etc.

are you attending Baitings or Scammonden this year?

I know cheshire mccc are there 19th July..

who holds a key for the gate.. as i live next doo and wouldnt mind a blast on it lol.

cliorod
12-06-2006, 17:45
Gunner,
We are organising an Hillclimb at Scammonden on the 20th August. As I have said earlier,I am fairly sure ~~ that the MSA revoked the track licence at Baitings. For bikes it may be different ~~ ACU,look after those.Anyway I will definitely find out ~~~ unless they hold a practice day or something like that ????.
Road & Stage rally navigation,is generally 6 fig reference, with 7/8 to get the tenths~~ all on 1:50,000 scale landranger OS maps..Ther are other lesser used means of defining a route ~~~ Tulip diagrams,Herringbone diagrams, spot heights, grid references ~~ easy peasy  :P  .On rallies in the North,~~ night rallies, mainly use 6 fig reference. If you keep checking in on our website, you will see that sometime in July,we are having several navigational fun trips out,to try and get people interested.Once I get a date etc,I will post on here and also the website ~~ everyone welcome ~~.
Rod.

yeah i'll be up for that, as i am very used to the land ranger maps 1:50k.. certainly the best maps to read from.

Desert Navigation was by far the most fun, absolutely featureless on the map.. and the dirt roads were constantly vanishing with the prevailing winds lol.

I was sent an email by Cheshire about it im pretty sure!

for thosse wanting info on how to get started etc.. here is the mid cheshire mc website address;
