I think most 3/4/5Mpixels camcorders are referring to the resolution for still photos for the camera. Most home-user movie camcorder use less than 1Mpixels. IMO, general rule of thumb in getting better quality - try to get a ccd sensor (instead of cmos), look for 640x480 or higher frame size, try to get better than 20 frames per seconds recording.

I was asking about DV cam sometime ago as well. I think Lunner could be using the same camera. There's a link in the thread with some in-car footage using the camera.

Personally i'd rather spend a wee bit more, and know that sound and picture quality wasn't compromised, DVD cams are still a tad expensive but DV cams are way down in price, and DV tapes are a LOT less expensive than the SD cards you'd need for the little 3.1 ebay cam, thats just me tho :?

lunner's camera is a bit weak...the quality is'nt that good I'd spend just over 200 quid for that price you'll get a good quality cam.

Martin, is your cam digital with a dvd inside it? Ive got a camera with digital tape which cost me bout £300 but when i transfer to the comp the file sizes are massive and quality not so good :?

no mine is dv tapes quality is very good indeed once captured and reduced in size/quality is still good.

I usually compress from 2100kbps to 990 when putting it on computer....the fcs vid is 990kbps but good quality..

IMHO, go with the SD memory DVcam, if you:-
1) plan to rough handle the camera
2) like the instant plug & play USB drive convenience
3) are not shooting in low light
4) can tolerate VCD quality or lower video output
5) want a tiny camera to stick it anwhere you want
6) don't need optical zoom capability

I think the DV182 is quite low-end in terms of quality. The higher-end SD memory cameras are quite a bit better in quality (640x480, 30fps) but still can't match the quality of the CCD/DVtape/DVD cameras.
