It seems more than likely that my valver has succumbed to one of the clio's common problems and I have 'excessive play in the steering'

If it turns out to be the part on the steering column that's knackered I'm gonna get a new one and get it fitted.

Now....where can I find a new one, and how much? GSF list the racks, but not columns

Also, a Renault specialist garage, how long would you think it would take to fit one? Just so I can get an idea of labour charges....

Cheers people!

Tom

Mine was picked up on at MOT.

I was breaking a 16v at the time, column in that had no play they said they would fit that coloumn for 3 hours labour.

Until the looked further and said they can weld up the joint for me instead. few hours later all done :D

So hands up who can do a column in less than an hour hehe?

& who's the closest to north wales!

List price for a new column is about 170 odd from what I've found out so far without actually speaking to Renault, although I might be able to get that down.

Depends what car you have...

On mine it would probably take around a week cos every bolt will be seized, just ask the lads at LTR....they have a banning order on my car! Their swear jar is full though!! :?

tbh...u have to expect the worst wen working on clios....lol...bejesus' has taught me that...seems like we are finally getting that one close to being somewhere near right tho lol...its not been an overnight transformation tho.

columns dont take long to weld tbh...its the removing the carpet etc that takes the time.altho it is an arse of a position to get urself into to weld lol

I had a new steering column fitted just over a month ago!!
Steering column was £135.00 from Renault, not sure what labour charges would be coz I got a mate to fit it..... Took him about 2.5 hours to remove knackered column and fit new one.

Was quoted £170 inc VAT for new column from Renault. With breakers charging IRO £50 plus postage I decided to get a new one after old weld failed and managed to knock Renault down to £140.

Bit of a bugger to remove old and replace new one, more fiddly due to lack of space and removal of trim but if you are used to working on a Valver and patient, its not too difficult and why pay someone else when you can do yourself.

Halfords ratchet spanner was very useful when trying to remove/replace the bolt going through bottom of colum.
