It generally needs to be more than a few hours, best if overnight. Remember the alarm wont work etc!

Here's my interpretation of it :

It resets the map back to the original values. This means when the car is driven again it is effectivly running the correct map. Over time the ECU "learns" from the engine sensors and modifies the map for saftey/econnomy/driveability reasons. This could be due to the nock sensor reading slight nocking on combustion and changing the engine timing accordingly, it could be due to differing voltage values in the vehicle, and a number of other things!

However after driving for a few days the ECU starts to learn again and it slowly gets back to where it is!

There is no need to reset ECU's, as at the end of the day they just get back to where they were before the reset anyway!

The discussion is concerning "Hillpower Stage 1" Chips (and possibly some other makes of chips, which are an off the shelf chip for the ECU, which has a slightly moddified mapping and fueling along with a raised rev limiter.

These chips seem to benifit from a reset, but no-one is totally sure why! It is unclear wether it is a fault with the chip, or engine related.
