I'm off to see another valver tomorrow (well today really) and just wanted to see what I should look out for?

I've got a 1.4 Clio just now so know all the general things to look out for on them but don't know if there are any common problems particular to valvers. Any suggestions on things to check much appreciated

Also, could anyone tell me what all the gauges on a valver should be reading (oil pressure etc) when idling at cold and warmed up etc.

Thanks.

Check for rust!!! Espcially the sills, make sure there are no gaping holes in them (yes mine had one).

Check for surface rust underneath the rear seats and boot carpet.

My oil is about bang on 100 once upto temp.

Cold start idle = 3 bar dead on
Warm engine idle = 1 bar
3000RPM warm engine = 3 bar

Um other things, check for excessive play in the steering rack, check the PAS pump (turn the wheel on the spot lots of time), see if it howls its ass off.

Bulbs on guages e.t.c Rest is just general initiative.

Make sure the gearbox has a positive change and feels good. Most common prob on valvers is the box and will cost you £££ to fix

Thanks for the suggestions folks. As for the gearbox- I know that's knackered on it anyway and thats why the car is so cheap. I've already sourced another box at a decent price so it doesn't bother me too much as long as thats the only major problem.

Any other things to look for?

I'll keep an eye out for those things. I don't know what I'll do though as the car is on Ebay (currently £450) at the minute but the guy will sell outside for £600. In a way £600 with a duff gearbox seems a bit much but he says there are others coming to look afterwards if I don't buy it - but don't know whether he is talking shite or not.

I'm not sure whether to just bid through ebay in the hope it doesn't go up, or just try and knock him down from £600 and buy it there and then if it's in OK condition. Suppose I'll just have to see what it's like.

Doubt it will reach £600 on Ebay with a knackered box.
I only want £1k for my M reg with 12 months MOT.

Thats what I'm thinking too, but he says he has others coming to see it to buy outside ebay - but I don't know if thats just him trying to push the price up. He said about £550 to £600 when I aksed first so I'll probably try and get it for £500. I'm not going to be pushed into paying much more than £500 when it's on ebay at £450 just now.

I bought it!!! It had a few little issues other than the gearbox such as rusty arches (just surface rust) but i'm quite please with it. I got it for £500 in the end so I can't complain too much - at first he wasn't wanting to go below £600 but I got him down to £500 without too much hassle.

Not actually got the car at mine yet as I need my dad to follow me driving it home incase the gearbox goes completely so that he can tow me if need be, lol. You can see some pics in the Ebay advert http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Renault-Clio-1-8-16v-small-modifications_W0QQitemZ4631347213QQcategoryZ88433Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
