as alot of you know my williams 2 is changing hands to daz0rz on here sunday night

was thinking of getting 106gti or saxo vts next

anyone got on thoughts on either of these or which they prefer?

106's look to be more expensive of the 2 to be honest tho.

only really wanna spend 1k at most

so about p-r reg im looking at

cheers

Gav

106 gti
lovely cars!

saxslows r crap

Martin
18-04-2006, 18:44
You'll struggle to get a vts for 1k even more so with a 106 gti.

Gav how can you give 2 virtually identical cars such different descriptions?

The saxo is just as good as the gti ....

Scott-16v!
18-04-2006, 18:45
i doubt you'll get a 106 gti for £1k to be honest (no doubt you'll find a bargain one though  ), of the two i would prefer one of them, i was going to get one inbetween the valver and willy but i decided to just stick with what i'd got.
only fault with the vts imo is a bit of an image problem, i still really like the look of the facelift ones though.

When can i pick the wheels up then mate?

im talkin shit mart

Im just talkin aboot looks
I cant stand the look of the Saxo's but love the look of the 106'gti

no clue how the saxo drives, but prefer the looks int and ext of a gti to a saxo

matt uk
18-04-2006, 18:48
oh i can get for 1k easily mate dont worry about that

been offered a saxo vts for 900 just needs taxing

just have to know where to look my friend.

i still might just go back to the whole swift gti scene as i know those cars inside out.

the idea was to profit off the williams and kinda retire from the whole car buying/selling thing and concentrate on other things.
the whole car "thing" seems to be taking over my life recently and its time to stop. just want a half decent car that reliable and isnt embarrssing to drive.

the williams would be fine that ive got now but i cant turn down £800+ profit ??

sunday night mate

arranged with daz to collect sunday night after the midlands meet so i'll have the willy for then. also need it next few days for work etc

sunday night bring me £160 and you can take them away

;)

Ok matey, i'll pop round after the meet. :)

The suspension setups of the Saxo n Pug are slightly different, and the Saxos are supposed to be slightly less friendly on the limit. Not driven a Saxo, but a 106 is a fine little beast and makes very decent progress indeed

I would say Matt, if you're a big guy (or, at least, have big feet!) you'd better stay away cos they're noticeable smaller than a Williams and the pedal box particularly is absolutely tiny and not particularly nice to use.

BRUN
18-04-2006, 18:55
arent they the same car ?

Jamie.
18-04-2006, 18:56
if i was going to have a quick thrash in one would be the saxo for me, just because they are cheap and there will be plenty to choose from. if i wanted to keep it for a while and have a bit of friendly fun it would be the gti. but like martin says your budget is tight to say the least

Zollo
18-04-2006, 18:57
arent they the same car ?

Yeah, basically the same car. Differences are in the styling and the setting up and final development.

matt uk
18-04-2006, 18:59
in theory performance should be the same then.....

Zollo
18-04-2006, 19:00
Yup, straight-line performance should be identical. As with a lot of cars though, there's often quite a variation between examples. Some are a lot healthier than others.

Jamie.
18-04-2006, 19:02
ive heard ppl say there is a difference in performance but i doubt there will be much, in fact id say ppl say which ever one is faster as its in their drive. my mate had a saxo and it was quicker than gti's but 2months before when he wanted a gti it was the other way around.
the diff is going to be so neglible who will care, all i would care about is which one looks better, or which one is miles cheaper

matt uk
18-04-2006, 19:03
well i think i might be more tempted for the 106 gti

but i may be looking at £1200 plus for one of those :(

MatBrown
18-04-2006, 19:06
When i was looking at them a few years ago i think i preferred the dash in the Saxo but the seats from the 106.

Mat.

matt uk
18-04-2006, 19:09
well if their so similar i'll just go with the cheapest

a nice standard example of either would be nice

dont like this whole chavved up selection with strange lexus lights and lowered 4.5 metres buisness

Jamie.
18-04-2006, 19:09
When i was looking at them a few years ago i think i preferred the dash in the Saxo but the seats from the 106.

Mat.

i really like the dashs on the saxos and 106's after they changed from anolouge mile counter to digital, think that was around 01/02? anyhow look nice, dont like the older style too much just think the mph needles look "funny".
i think i may go for the saxo, plainly because they are soo cheap.

matt uk
18-04-2006, 19:11
whats the differance on the saxo's then?

i know they came out P reg 97

is the like a ph1,2,3 i thought they were all same

anyone got any pics of the differances???

Zollo

Cheapest GTi on Autotrader is just over two grand. It'll be a mighty fine example you'll be getting

Unless you're going to an auction or getting a trade in from a dealer...

matt uk
18-04-2006, 19:14
yeah but ive seen one for 1400 on autotrader and thats s good as 1250 cashon day

just depends what day you look

get vts on ebay for 1000 easily

Andyvalver
18-04-2006, 19:14

matt uk
18-04-2006, 19:23
your missing the point andrew my dear

i dont want a mint example im not bothered about scuffs dints etc

its just got to be a car to get me about that has a liitle bit of poke to it.

swift gti would be ideal, just gotta find one

Zollo
18-04-2006, 19:36
If a car's been abused on the outside, it will have been neglected on the inside too. So it'll break down a lot and will be a shit example to drive. Then you'll complain about it being a French piece of crap and ask us what all the fuss is about!

Pay peanuts, get crap. Unless you're very lucky.

I had a vts before the williams, i loved it to bits, actually prefered it to the williams. Unfortunatly the engine went due to lack of care, dont let that put you off they are solid, i just treated mine like shit and didnt service it for over a year.

I would get a vts because i prefer the exterior and interior, the gti is cheaper insurance though gti 13 and the vts is 14.

What ever one you get you will really enjoy it, not as good round the bends but nicer looking and cheaper to run.

Mattie
18-04-2006, 22:17
think i prefer the 106....purly on luks though...and iv heard they handle slightly betta than the VTS...not sure if thats true though?

vts_saxo
18-04-2006, 22:22
They are ment to be more predictable than the vts

kj16v
18-04-2006, 22:30
I thought GTI and VTS were practically the same car mechanically? Just that that Saxo's the more chavtastic of the two
Either way I don't like either of them - not that that they're bad or anything. I just can't fit in them and I don't like anything I can't fit in!

LaurenGTI
18-04-2006, 22:44
I have my 106 GTI and love it...I personally like it better than the saxo, looks wise! :D

matt uk
18-04-2006, 22:51
yeah but does the 106 justify spending the extra £600 quid on????

which seems to be the price differance

vts_saxo
18-04-2006, 22:54
Nah go for the vts, better dash and cheaper to buy

LaurenGTI
18-04-2006, 22:55
Well Id say yes, I have owned a saxo too (not a VTR or VTS) and much prefer the 106 anyday, just has something about it...think that they are more desirable! :D

Coops
18-04-2006, 22:57
106 definatly has more class to it, am not a citroen fan atall!

Daz.
18-04-2006, 22:59
I nearly bought a vts at the grand old age of 17, gold x reg jobby - was a nice car to drive - the mileage and the insurance ultimately put me off, went to look at a dark blue 106 a few years later and loved the interior my mate had a vts engined mk1 xsi and that was ****ing awesome!

I prefer the look of a mk1 vts with the dash of a gti but you can't have it all - i'd have the vts at the end of day - that ebay ones a nice one - its quite a rare colour too...

steveos_16valver
18-04-2006, 22:59
mk 1 vts better looking

and yes both cars made by the same man at production line and come off the same production line practually the same cr but the vts is like 0.02 seconds quicker and about 20g lighter tbo theres nothing in it but i do prefer the vts mk 1 looks wise

but mate its up to u @the end of the day cause youll be driving it

v

matt uk
18-04-2006, 23:01
so what years were the mk1 vts ???

when did the mk2 start?

what are the differances?

steveos_16valver
18-04-2006, 23:06
right mk 1 vts was up to t reg i belive

mk 2 vts nasty shap really dont like the lights

mk 2 had different front end eg light grill bonnet ect also had EGR valve which i belive to make the car slower as it recycles the zorst gases which are already burnt so you get a mix off new and used gases causing a poorer mixture of fuel and gas

mk 1s didnt have it so slightly quicker imo but also according to the boys on saxosports the mk1 vts on the certin engine and depending where the egr mount was 130bhp and not the norm 120bhp (apparently)

matt uk
18-04-2006, 23:12
i thought mark ones dont have the egr thingy

"mk 1s didnt have it so slightly quicker imo but also according to the boys on saxosports the mk1 vts on the certin engine and depending where the egr mount was 130bhp and not the norm 120bhp (apparently)"

did that mean to say mk2????

im still confused lol ive always thought they all looked the same

Daz.
18-04-2006, 23:16
mk1 vts have miles better looking fronts - meaner in a way - mk2's look a little wrong to me, mk2's have digital mileometer/trip and white dials...

And you gotta love mk2 rims - first thing i'd get for a mk1

Thats as much as I know difference wise lol

steveos_16valver
18-04-2006, 23:17
on the rocker cover there are egr mounts on all vts

matt uk
18-04-2006, 23:20
oh right but mk 1's dont have the valve?

?

matt uk
18-04-2006, 23:21
anyway its doesnt matter anyway cause i cant afford a mk2

lol

steveos_16valver
18-04-2006, 23:24
no they dont non of them look for a later t reg as the have the mk2 shape vts wheels like mine did :)

matt uk
18-04-2006, 23:29
i'll probably be looking around the p-r reg mark at best

so 120bhp should be ok..... i think

steveos_16valver
18-04-2006, 23:32
mate thats plenty 120bhp but as soon as you get it lower it the handeling is poo as standard like a boad same as the 106
oww and remember there a lot lighter than the clio so less power @ the light or youll be wheel spinning all day long :P

106 GTi - 8.2s 0-60, 127mph

Saxo VTS - 7.7s 0-60, 127mph

imo the saxo is great, handles very well and goes well too. Slightly quicker than the GTI some say.

106's suffer from stone chips badly on front and rear arches, bonnet and bumper!

Saxos dont, but saxos have shit painfull seats i found. Interior, saxo feels far more upto date and not really aged.

I will defend them, because they are great good fun cars!

If you wondered why my user name is Frenchy, because ive had most of em

Q for steveos.... what kinda mileage can these engine take??

this one is just over 100k

any thoughts?

vts_saxo
19-04-2006, 20:16
There loads going round with that sort of mileage, but my saxo felt more used at 55,000 than the willy does at 80,000, but i did not treat it well.

The engines are really good, love revving 7500 limit, mine was used for lots of motorway work, never let it heat up, straight on the motorway flat out and it never complained.

I wouldnt want to be in other crash in one, the best describing word, they fold!! I am sure steves did aswell when it kissed the tree.

My sister's 106 GTi has about 60k and feels very tired compared to other cars of similar mileage. Needs a new clutch and gearbox rebuild, and has already needed a headgasket change. Brakes are also pretty weak. So no, they don't wear their mileage well!

Good fun though :D

steveos_16valver
20-04-2006, 17:20
well aslong as it been well looked after iv seen them on 130k @ work still running sweet as a nut the guy has had it from new 1996 and can accound for every penny of fuel he has put in it and every penney on parts and labour
hes got a little book in the car so thought id have a read

mark7984
21-04-2006, 16:07
out of the two i've only driven a vts, ok if you've got small feet! otherwise when you go to press the accelerator its easy to press the brake at the same time or catch your foot on the inner wheel arch and that gets really annoying allthough my mates got one and he says its ok when you've got used to it. apparently the 106 is the same car so that may have that problem too. I'd keep the williams. ok you'll make 800 quid profit if you sell but youll probably end up spending that on repairing the vts especially if you're buying one with 100+ k miles on the clock. also the interiors sound really rattley and cheap to me! the williams sounds a lot more solid, and everyones got a saxo or a 106. how many williams do you see driving around?? I'd keep it, unless you know something really exspensive is about to go then keep dont get rid.
