Iv only had this 2nd hand geabox in 5 months but ive just found an oil leak, iv jacked the car up and can see oil around the driveshaft, so presuming the seals gone?

Anyone had a crack at replacing one, is it easy, cheap?

Cheers

Depends which driveshaft the leak is coming from mate.

There is the drivers side where the tiny stub axle comes out of. The seal can be replaces no problem on this.

The other side is just a cover plate held on with 3 13mm screws. This also holds in your driveshaft. Could be that these are just slightly lose. You can access them by removing the wheel and the plastic trim.

Drivers side is the stub axxle mate.

There is a weird looking seal around the stub axle. Get underneath and have a look. You might have to remove the driveshaft completely to see all the seal, but you might be lucky, sometimes there is little cover plate.

You box doesn't make any noises does it?

This seal went on mine, but it was caused by a lose bolt and the pinion gears being forced apart under load. The garage tightened up and put a new seal on without removing anything but the driveshaft, so it can be done.

:( turns out 2 be alot worse than expected, it got a lot worse after a half hour drive as I pulled up, looked underneath the car and it was pissing oil badly, got my unlce 2 come out and have a look and cant remember how he explained it but basically theres a lot of movement where the driveshafts meet and its causing the seal to change to an oval shape as it drives causing oil to piss out the gap, he said its a blown bearing or seal on the gearbox,
does that make any sense to anyone? can someone break me the bad news cost wise?

Could be the same problem I had mate.

Drain your gearbox oil, or whats left of it. Check the drain plug for metallic bits, if they are stuck on the drain plug then its a tell tale sign that a bearing has gone. Remove the drivers side driveshaft (really easy) and remove the broken seal. Inspect that for damage as it doesn't shouldn't change shape, most likely it has a split in it.

Best case - like mine, a garage can tighten up the offending nut.

Worst case - gearbox out and rebuild.

If the oil has any trace of metal then its a rebuild anyway mate...we all have done it at some stage...

cheers mate, well i really hope it is a case of tightening them up because Iv only had this gearbox in since jan and it cost me about £800 to get a second hand one put in, stitch up!

I took mine to a place called Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead...granted I took them just the gearbox but they rebuilt it for me.

Then when it started pi$$ing oil out, I took the car to them and they had it sorted in 20 mins.

It has lasted over 5-6 years then I had another rebuild (uprated gears and bearings for piece of mind) before moving out here.

Did your 2nd hand box come with any guarantee? Can't exactly blame the garage that put it in as the fault is internal, unless they damaged the seal. Worth talking to them and see what they say. Could at least try and help you out, outaa sympathy.

No it took the bloke 2 weeks to fit it and when I got it back there parts from the engine missing, brackets, bolts etc and the problem still wasnt sorted so took it 2 a renault specialist who had to replace bushes and bolts that were in the wrong way round and new gear linkage because he had bent it in fitting the new box.

The gurantee was only for 3 months so iv not gone one now!

Oh sh$t what a monkey!!

Well maybe the Renault guy remembers you, and more importantly remembers the car!! Even though there is no warranty he may recall what he did and can offer advice. I would say that knowing the car and what has been done is priceless.

Lets face it thats why all of us work on our own cars and keep them so long...

It was a mate of mine that manufactures the gearbox for the scoob and the rally special pug 306 cosworth. Had all the bits remade with slightly staighter cuts for less transmission loss and put them through a normalising and quencing process, then for extra life and protection had them all shot peened.

Most of it was done as a favour, so can't really say what the cost would be.

Fair enough.

Thought box refurbs were like £600+ ?

Anders

Maybe that includes taking the thing out in the first place, but if you take the box to a place they shouldn't be charging anymore than £250-300.

Unless you need some major parts.

hate to guess renault part prices. maybe 500 quids worth of parts. i know a refurb renault box is £522.00 cause i bought one sent it to bernie and had it rebuilt shot peened and an lsd fitted.
