View Full Version : Fibreglass bonnet group buy?

Lunner
06-04-2006, 19:07
There is a local fibregalss company locla to me, need to speak to them sometime, the moulds are a bit over priced, but the prioducts are stupidly cheap, as in £500 for an entire beatle bodyshell, compared to £200 for a k-tec bonnet.

So if i can get a few names down as interested i can go and have a chat with them and hopefully have some idea of numbers to say to him about

Coops

Bit more info, would be a skin only, would be smoothed over whrere the badge goes and soudl allow mounting of the vent, k-tec say theirs is 3.75kg

Martin
06-04-2006, 19:43

Martin
06-04-2006, 20:06
nah I'm not paying 200 quid fook that I bought one for 70 quid off Tommo on here so if one came up around that price I'd be tempted..most likely be selling the car at the end of the summer so won't want one in 6 months...

Just a note, I will be making my own mould in a few weeks and the bonnets should only cost about £100 they will be GRP but im gunna make mine with a carbon fibre bulge.

07-04-2006, 17:44
Sounds good Flan. Can you make varying thickness ones as some people may want a slightly thicker version if they're not massively bothered about the weight. I'll have one thats as thin as is possible is thats OK lol.

See ya

If I have a car to put it on count me in

clowo16v
07-04-2006, 19:19
I meant they might want to use the original frame and hinges etc so it would have to be thicker. I don't care if mine flaps about and its gonna be held with 4 dzus fastners.

See ya

25-04-2006, 13:50
Ok... gonna put in an order for some more Gelcoat this week. the bonnets will be Black but you can paint them.

I was gonna do it a single skin of Fiberglas with internal ridges for ridgidity (sp) i was also gonna make it so they would use the same mounts at the front and clamp mec at the back. but once i have the mould i can make to order...

Does anyone have a spare Valver bonnet i could borrow for a day.

Flan - where are you based? My bonnet is already off the car so you are welcome to borrow for a few days - I'm on Essex/Suffolk border. I'm planning on junking the front mounts and clamp mechanism so just want one that is as light as possible please (without blowing apart in the wind at speed, of course!)

Same for me Lunner wouldn't mind the carbon scoop would look minter than mint with an orange bonnet and the black scoop.

25-04-2006, 17:03
Personally i recon a carbon bulge woudl look naff......either all or nothing, and a recon a carbon skin woudl get nicked off mine too....stealth is the way to go 8)

25-04-2006, 19:04
Might be interested in this too. If its upto Flans usual standard it should come out pretty damn good.

Will it be on at FCS mate so we can all have a look?

Lunner
25-04-2006, 19:16
Hopefully, but depends on funds, if its on it won't be painted

Andy P
25-04-2006, 19:42
Black bonnets can look ok. Like on white, or the nana (near as black)

but on blue, not really imo.

What does a standard bonnet weight?

Lunner
25-04-2006, 19:50
gotta be getting on for 20kg

clowo16v
25-04-2006, 19:55
My cars gonna be lairy orange though I think with black wheels so the black scoop could look OK. I'll photoshop it and see.

Another of Flans money making schemes, fair play mate. Gotta make your money back for the Clio 20v somehow

Yup thinks it's about 18kgs you can feel it....carried one a few hundred yards at york lol

stevie_b
25-04-2006, 23:09
17 kg on the scales the other day. But they probably aren't that accurate judging by what they say I weigh!

26-04-2006, 11:40
put me down for one in a few months... would want mine to fit original mounting brackets and latch.

I need all the clearence i can get above my fuel rail, so long as its not bulkier than the original in that area i shud be fine with my set up.

Flan
26-04-2006, 12:14
Think tom's lending me his bonnet which was nice.

thay will have the reses for the original badge, (is that cool)

Ill be making the mould this weekend so firs skin will be next week, i will post one up asap and they will be in gloss Black to start with. Carbon will ba a tad more but not allot.

Lunner
26-04-2006, 13:16
Not cool with badge recess......smooth yours and use that......you don't want my bonnet its got dents from both sides in it.

Depeending on price of carbon one carbon would be cool, but don't wanna pay masses more for it....means i don't have to paint it then :D

Dan_mk1
26-04-2006, 13:23

Andy P
26-04-2006, 19:03
as long as the carbon one is less than £50 more it makes sense.

Its gunna cost an extra £50 to get painted anyway.

(im sure there is someone out there who can get it done cheaper)

Lunner
26-04-2006, 19:12
Its VERY hard to source the carbon in a width wide enoguh for the bonnet....and then you have the extra materials cost as well

Flan
27-04-2006, 09:19
Carbon scoop will be about £40 more, full carbon will be even more, K-tec cheat and put black gell-coat strips where the ridge is. this is an eaiser way of doing it but its not as nice, Im trying to source the carbon asap but will be grp for now,

Lunner you sure you don't want the badge resess..... Martin what would you prefer. i don't wanna make two moulds....

worst thing with carbon bonnets is gettin the weave right......if its all skew whiff it looks shit...imo.

either with or without recess for badge for me mate lol.

Lunner
27-04-2006, 09:27
Yeah defo don't want it my smoothed bonnet on the RSi looked bad ass.....if i'm the onyl one who wants it smooth just do it with the recess and i'll fill it before i spray it, but would prefer not to as thats extra effort lol

Dan_mk1
27-04-2006, 09:28
With recess!

Flan
27-04-2006, 11:33
right i've ordered all my stuff, managed to get some carbon aswell...

but its gone up in price...

Im still not 100% happy with the mould, few little marks i wanna polish out before i make one.... i've been through all this effort should put the extra time in to make them spot on...Plus black shows up all the inperfections (now i no why k-tec did them white  )

its taken me 5 Days so far and the mould cost allot to make.

First bonnet this weekend... so who's first :D (pin on)

06-05-2006, 14:39
Right. here's a few pics of the firts one, Ideally this one will need painting as the grp is very thin and patchy. its very ridgid round the front, a tad flexy on the back but pinned down will be mint, This is a 2 skin one with extre fibreglass in places to give strength where its needed, i'd say its about 2.5Kg, its bloody light.

Here's a few pics i took. i couldn't be bothered to take my bonnet off so i just placed it on top for the pics

im happy with the result, althouh it takes a bloody long time and fibreglas itches like mad

bolt on ones i dunno... there gonna have to be 3 skin plus with strengthing bars so i gotta work on that one

Picked mine up on Sunday. Great quality - Stuart has done a real good job on them. So good I will probably not bother painting mine, which will save another few hundred grammes :). All in it is a good 12kg lighter than the std bonnet.

Strong too, as I found out when some muppet decided to pull out of a pub car park across my path of travel with me quite close at 60mph. Heaved on the brakes to slow up two tonnes of car and contents (incl. F7R in the back!) and heard bonnet banging around in the back and expected to check it later to find it busted, but was glad to find it in perfect condition.

If anyone wants photos of it on the car then I can take some, although it is not finished yet as need to cut out rain catcher and add bonnet pins, etc. Also car is in a mess as stripping has taken a back seat (not literally - there aren't any back seats in it now!) whilst I sort out my new F7Rs to go in!
