Right the steering is lose on my vavler :(
It has about 3 or 4 cm of play before it does anything, i can hear bubbles in the system so im guessing the powerstearing needs topping up or changing but could it also need a new rack ??

Or what other common problems could it be ta

Weld the steering column at the vibration damping joint? :D

Allan

don't really want to have all the vibrations coming up the wheel :(
i like the nice vibration less ssteeringldon't

Mine is welded and i get no vibration. Reno prob used a damper on the column cos they couldnt be arsed to make a damperless one for the willy. Rally cars had no dampers on column, they were welded as far as i know.

will that deffo cure the play in the steering tho ??
As atm it works fine just has loads of play i.e 3 or 4cm movement before it starts to turn

Wayne had this problem on his valver, he bought a new column... either that or a weld by the sounds of it. isn't it worse tho if a welded one goes :shock:

If the colum is worn it will be at the damper joint. If its the rack (less likely) it will be at the rack / column pinion join.

Get in the foot well and pull back the carpet where the pedals are you will see the damper join on the column. There is a rubber gaitor over it. Pull this back to reveal the join. Move the steering wheel and fell with a hand whether the top join rotates in the bottom female section as you move the wheel.thats where you weld it.

M = upper male part
F = Lower female part
1 = Rotation
2 = Rubber anti vibration packaging worn from here
3 = Weld here

I just bought a new column from Renault £124.12 + vat = £145.84 thats trade price, only 10% trade at Main dealers though

lol, so if u have an accident your gonna get a steering column going through your skull... nice. :wink:

The column would collapse within itself. WOULDN'T Do any other damage.

I welded mine up just to see the difference before I changed it. Was ok, down very bumpy surfaces I suffered with bump steer though. I chose to buy a new one but its not cheap so not a option for everyone.

Id weld mine if it was brand new. The steering respones is sharper. Feedback from the tyres is more 'feelable'

No more likely to get a column through your skull if its welded than if its a new column.

tbh i would much prefer to get a new colum as i want to keep it the way it should be :)

I will look tomorrow in the light see if its that if not its the stearin rack and then i will be upset
:(

umm i just checked the service history on my willy mate, it had a new rack put in just before i bought it, 150quid for the labour and 130quid for the rack, dont knoe if it was brand new or not tho... 150quid labour is only 3 hrs work so im guessing its not an engine out job.

ok right just had a look and the rubber gator is massive on mine and it also carry's on under the floor so will have to figure out how to take it off as it doesnt just slide :(

Allan

You think if an rt has a huge bolt they should have donr it to the willy?

Just seen this post now...

I have a little play in my steering and I'm tempted to weld the column rather than a new rack after reading the comments about it. Who can I get to do this KS?? Obviously need someone I can trust as don't want any cowboy messin about with the steering!

Ask around garages for a recommendation for a very skilled welder.

My garage had one they use for very difficult jobs.

Isn't the column different on the 16 valvers hp due to the narrower track etc.?? I'll ask about at some local garages over the next few weeks, it's not causing a major problem at the mo but it's a job which will need doing

No column is exactly the same. Only variation is power steering or not. Power steering is shorter IIRC.

I had mine welded. The steering now feels better then ever and at £50 it was much cheaper then the whole new rack that renault london west said that I needed! Skanks! I would say that a good weld is better then getting a new column as you would only get play again in a few years of driving....seems to be a bit of bad design on renaults part along with the lack of drain holes in the sunroof and the dodgy routing of the clutch cable!
